1989 Civic hatch
Ok, so I'm lookin at a 1989 Civic hatch, it has 218,000kms on it now, the body is mint, no rust, no dents, garage kept, whats your opinion on this? He's askin $1800 for it, (its out here in Calgary)

yeah i would inspect the wheel wells on it. check and see if any of the body panels are slightly off. that could mean it may have been in a accident cause they never get it aligned right. drive it also. see how it handles. let go of the wheel and seee if it pulls realy bad to one side. lots of things to check when buying a used car.
but seems to be a great car if its still mint and only has 218K's and if its original engine.
i would grab it for $1800 for sure if he claims its alll mint

take a magnet and check the 1/4 panels etc, check the floor, check the strut towers under the hood for rust, check under the hood, drive it slow crank the wheel lock to lock listen for clicks, always check everything, i got gayed on my first car cause i knew **** all, now i know a little better

if they dont use salt though then its unlikely to have rust

Yo, about this sand vs salt thing and salt being cheaper---- do they not notice how much damage salt causes TO THE ROAD!! Spring time there are pot holes EVERYWHERE! thanks to the salt. shouldnt' that factor into the cost?

Okay, about this salt vs. sand issue, it isn't about cost but for safety believe it or not.
Ontario gets more percipitation than Alberta, Quebec is also bad along the river. Montreal is worse than Toronto which is worse than Calgary.
MTO controlled highways (including the 400 series) as a general rule use Sand. City's generally use salt. So, in Toronto, the city streets will be covered with salt and the 401 with sand (but depending on the situation, they can also use salt).
At temperatures between 0 and -10, salt if very effective and has good de-icing properties. Yes, better than sand. That means, if salt is used, the roads will clear up faster from snow. If the roads clear up faster, there are less accidents (usually).
Out West, the temperatures are generally colder and below -10 salt is pretty much useless. Actually, when it gets colder than this, ice becomes sticky. What does sand do? It actually is there to add traction to the existing snow/ice. It is not there to melt it.
Also, since there is less snow to start with, there is less of a need to apply sand... Which means less damage to car bodies.
Now in Montreal, they use a hybrid of salt and sand. If you go there, the cars are much dirtier than in Toronto. Their cars are not only white but brown as well. I am not sure if you realize but sand is very abrasive. I think the cars there get the worst of it.
So, does this make sense?

what he said. Down to -21 degrees or so, salt works much better than sand does. Sand is just as bad for your car as salt is: you can't wash away stone chips, you CAN wash away salt.
The only reason there is a move in motion to stop using as much salt on the roads is the environment. Salting ground is an excellent way to kill all life in it..
