slow seatbelt retractor on 98 Civic sedan

I have noticed that the driver's seatbelt on my 98 Civic is not retracting fast/far enough...I have to "help" it back into its housing after I have unhitched it... I am thinking that it is a faulty retractor mechanism but I don't want to run to the dealer and be charged 100's of dollars for a fix...The seatbelt works fine other than this retraction problem.

Can anyone suggest a fix??

Thanks,

Try cleaning your "D-ring". It is the part that holds the seatbelt up above your shoulder. If you look at the part where the belt slides, it is probably dirty. Even if it doesn't look dirty, clean it. Don't bother going to the dealer, there is no fix for it. Your seatbelts will work properly when needed (hopefully you will never need them).
