they'll qualify easily

top 4 teams in south america qualify and even if they stay in 5th like they are now, they play a home and away playoff against the 4th place team in north america - central - carribean.

I think he meant Olympics soccer, not World Cup. Brazil doesn't care much about Olympic soccer. WC soccer is a different thing.

No, I meant the world cup.

They are 5th in qualifying and are playing like crap. How would that make me think they were capable of winning the world cup today?

I do agree with you Luka. Brazil is playing like crap these days, but I'm not sure if they wouldn't manage to win the WC. These guys seem to always rise up to the occasion and win, even during years when they have struggled to qualify.

It's for both men and women. For men, the restrictions are that players need to be under 23. Every team is allowed 3 players over 23. No restrictions are in place for women.

As for how teams qualify, I only know that for the UEFA region, 4 teams qualify. For the 2008 Olympic Games, the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship tournament in Holland served as the qualifying tournament.

The 4 semifinalists were supposed to qualify, however, because England competes at the Olympics as part of Great Britain which does not compete in football, the next two highest ranked teams in the tournament, Italy and Portugal, contested a playoff for the final place, which was won by Italy.
