I'm looking to make a new TV purchase and I've been eyeing the Sony 50" widescreen LCD projection:

I was thinking of the Samsung DLP but from what I've read, the contrast is not as good at the LCD rear projections:

I hope some of you have either one of these or have had experience with these. Just looking for input and opinions.

Anything LCD widscreen projection is pretty much good and from what i know have the best picture. Just stay away from anything thats rear projection.

check out google and do a search on tv's, types, comparisons, etc..
trust me you'll need a good few hours lol
but you'll learn a lot and will be able to choose the tv that suits u best. u can also pm civicnation, that guy knows a ****load about tv's now

Both are good tv's, i personally own the Samsung HLR-5064W and im very happy with it, one thing you gotta consider though is the picture will only be as good as the input quality and type (ie. cable). The samsung you can get a bit better price on than the sony and in the end it comes down to what you like. I would check out a store that has both of them and stand at approx how far away your gonna be sitting and watch both tv's and compare. I did this for awhile before making my decision and i think i made the right decision.

I am pretty sure my friend has that exact same Sony LCD projection TV, he got it about two years ago so it might be different now, but anyways, his seems very good. Nice picture, lots of inputs. The only bad thing I can think of is that when the sun shines on it you really can't see it properly.
But like Capo said, the best thing is to check them out in person so that you know if it is what you are looking for.

I work at futureshop, DLP's look much better on non-hdtv programming. Another thing to keep in mind is that DLP's have a much faster response time than an lcd projection, on an lcd u might see a trail when watching sports or anything with a fast motion. I would recommend getting the samsung. If you need more help pm me.

i've had mine for a year and love it.. they are not expensive anymore you can get a nice plasma for around 3000..
unles you are on the tv for hours you wont have problems with burn in

plasmas are junk...cant play video games on em, they are cheaper than before but still expensive and with the newer lcds and dlps there is no reason for a plasma anymore unless u just wanna say u have "plasma bro!"

plus I know 3 people that have had to send their plasmas in for warranty work already cuz they buggered up huge...try goin 6weeeks with no TV

i bought a $3000 DLP projector, mounted it on my ceiling.

We have a 98" screen that does upto 720p, and 1080i

Our basement can be made dark during the day no problem.

I challenge anyone to support a better solution.

From what I just read, it sounds like you have a 98" for $3000?

Plasma... burn in. (no thank-you).

DLP.... light wheel. (moving part that can break down later on) Also, I have notcied waaaay more movement blur on a DLP than an LCD rear projection, but it does have better blacks than the LCD.

LCD (projection).... great veiwing angles (even in bright light), no burn in problems, can be used as a computer screen (great for surfing the net from across the room ), Little to no blurring during fast movent/action on screen when using high def programs when compared to the DLP.


Overall, I would pick the LCD projection. remember, all you have is an LCD screen, a bulb, and some mirrors. If over time the brighness starts to fade, all you have to do is replace the bulb with a new one and presto, you basically have a new picture again.

For those of you saying... "but you can get burned out pixels on the LCD screen". Well, have you guys seen what happens when one of the millons of mirrors on the DLP gets stuck? (remember, they are moving parts.... and don't forget the colour wheel spinning too). It's just as disctracting (if not more so) than the LCD pixel buring out.

Btw, I have seen the numbers of the returns on different brands/models when it comes to DLP and LCD projection screens (don't ask). Let's just say that if you get a DLP, you are more likely to have something go wrong with the TV.

Happy with my Samsung plasma. No burn in even with my Xbox. Colour is awesome. $2400 on sale.

DLP projection is for people who cant afford a plasma or real LCD.

or for people who would rather not throw out a $2400 piece of equipment once it goes bad. DLP or rear LCD is definitely the way to go, you get more screen for your money and the picture quality is very similar and when the bulb goes you pop in a new one and have pretty much a brand new tv.

plasma's are for people who have either money to burn or buy in to the whole "ego boost" of being able to tell people "I own a plasma TV"

why stay away from rear projection?

if you have the room they are way cheaper and the quality is pretty good...just they take up a lot of room..

rear projection u gotta sit like directly infront of tv...if ur off to one side the quality suffers...down with rear projection crt units, do they even make those anymore
