This is definately wrong ... a person with great negotiating skills can easily grow faster in industry than in what you consider top accounting firms...

All you need is a mind for discussing the work that you have accomplished, and the ability to make the request.

On more than one occassion I have had my salary increase by over 25% in one raise, and one time I had it increase over 50%. It is because in industry I had the opportunity to know the person who can make it happen, and most importantly I had the ***** to ask.

well, there are always exception to this rule of upward movement.

From my interactions with people who are in industry and who still work in public practice the heirarchical nature of an accounting firm and the knowledge you gain from you experiences move you up quite quickly.

This movement upwards in both pay and position comes from the ongoing hiring each year by the firm of new student CA's which forces up the last batch. Again, this is a generalization ... its obvious that people working in the booming high tech industry would experience exponential growth in pay and in comparison accounting firms would see quite stagnant. However, this comparison in gneral terms to most of industry makes industry look stagnant.
