Well Steve there are two differen't admin right they could be talking about... Network\Domain Admin rights or local computer rights. I am going to assume you need admin rights for the local computer. So I guess you probably switched machines or something.
If your company has a domain name when you login under where it says "domain" then you'll need your IT guy to do that. If you just login to windows under the local machine and no domain then yes its possible to give yourself admin privledges.

This is understandable. This computer sucks. I cannot do anything on it. I cant get windows updates or anything. Even the monitor on this computer sucks. I had a 19" LCD before, now I got a ****ty old school monitor.
I WANT MY SONY MONITOR BACK !

only an account that has local admin can give local admin to another account
try logging in locally as 'admin' or 'administrator' with the following passwords
-administrator
-[blank] (as in no password)
-password
-admin
i have seen a lot of stupid setups. so change the domain from your network to whatever the computer name is. you might be able to login as local admin and add your network account as a local admin.
you will need admin rights to the domain if you try and browse for the user, if you type it, you should be fine.
good luck.
