here's the thing

Apple sells a lot of iPhones, but the people who are buying them aren't existing BlackBerry users who are deciding to switch to the iPhone. If they were, it would give them a reason to sweat. Apple already has a cult following out there and the majority of people who buy their iPhone are probably already a part of that. I'm sure they have won over a lot of consumers, but they pose no threat to the business market. On the other hand, RIM could always put more focus on making 'cooler' products for the consumer market, whereas Apple would have a much harder time taking our crown in the business market.

Did Apple Really 'Sell' 1 Million iPhones To End Users? Nope.
Information Week
Eric Zeman
Jul 15, 2008
That nice, shiny press release that Apple issued yesterday failed to point out one important fact. Apple counts "sales" as any device it has sold to wireless network operators such as AT&T (NYSE: T). The network operators then re-sell the devices to actual end users. According to analysts, only 425,000 end users bought iPhones over the weekend.
Yeah, how about them apples, Apple? Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster had calculated the actual number of 3G iPhone sales to be less than half a million. He came to that number by surveying stores on Friday, July 11, and figuring out how many new iPhones were being activated each hour.
His initial projections on Friday came to 28 new iPhones per hour per store. Based on the number of stores and the number of hours they were open, he estimated 425,000 units sold to end users over the weekend. He also suggested that it would take Apple a full 17 days to reach the 1 million mark. So why the discrepancy?
Fortune reports, "One explanation for the discrepancy may have to do with how Apple counts sales. Sales at Apple Stores are recorded at the register. But sales to its partners -- in this case, AT&T and the overseas carriers -- are recorded when the devices leave the loading docks in Asia. In other words, some of those 1 million iPhones recorded as sold by Apple may still be in transit."
Apple has sold one million iPhones to its customers. Some of its customers, such as anyone who bought an iPhone at an Apple Store, are actual end users. But many are not. Some customers are network operators, and Apple would be bulk-shipping hundreds if not thousands of devices to them. Apple may not have explicitly stated who it sold 1 million 3G iPhones to, but the implication was that one million people bought iPhones.
So thanks, Apple spin machine, for your interesting statistics and take on what a "sale" actually is.

thats what i thought what most companies do anyways...they sell it to vendor and then vendor sell them to the consumer. and companies based their sales on how many devices they have shipped...regardless if it is going to consumer or vendor

i dont think thats the point of the article

i think the point is apple was making it seem like 1 million actual went to END USERS

devices shipped and devices actually sold by the carriers is a huge difference

it's a once a year thing with the iPhone and there is always a craze so all these carriers want to get in on it and are more than willing to stock pile as many as they can so it's not a very accurate way to determine anything

ya but most companies will say "1 million devices shipped"

not 1 million devices sold in one weekend.

but to a company shipping it to a vendor, or consumer counts as a sale, they are selling that many devices to a vendor or a consume...regardless if they further get sold or not. all they care is that they sold that many devices to some party.

you're missing the point dude

what if they shipped 1 million devices to AT&T but AT&T doesn't end up selling any of them?

Does that still mean that the iPhone is as popular as everyone thought?

No.

Get it now?

It's how many the end users consume that determines that. All the carriers could potentially have made a HUGE MISTAKE by taking so many shipments of the devices. In the end, Apple would still make their money, but the iPhone craze would have been a sham.

Does that explain it better?

Basically Apple should take the time to distinguish between devices shipped and new subscribers added.

this dude eric zeman is clearly jelous or can not consume the publicity and media attention around the iphone. sometimes its not just sheer numbers, its the momentum around it all......and such articles or journalism helps the product indirectly.

lol

everytime someone writes an article about the iPhone that isn't something positive according to you they either don't know what they're talking about or they're jealous.

Good one.

I don't care about marketing diplomacy. Apple mislead people to believe that 1 million devices reached the hands of consumers and that is all.

I don't care if you have iPhone shoved so far up your *** that you're not willing to admit that.
