Stole this form clubsi... From the toronto star, wheels section, feb 22

Howie Lipton, Hamilton

Hot Hondas invite police attention

Police target teens in Honda Civics

Yourview, Feb. 8

I would say to letter writer Shane Hosein, you had better get used to it.

Those with modified cars such as yours, with tailpipes big enough to hold a watermelon, suspension lowered to the point of being dangerous, unnecessarily bright headlights and other doodads will continue to get the attention of police.

The chances of the owner of such a car speeding, as against the chances of an owner of an average non-modified family sedan, are many times greater.

Many modified vehicles do not comply with various laws.

I'm not saying that all drivers of modified vehicles speed, but many do. You just have to look at the 401. Who do you see speeding most of the time and what kind of cars are they driving?

Young people and drivers of modified cars.

Age "discrimination" is nothing new, either. Just look at car insurance rates. Try fighting with your insurance company over your premiums.

I had to bite the bullet when I was younger and pay higher premiums, even though I was a responsible driver and drove a conservative car.

If you don't want to be hassled by police, drive a car that isn't such a police magnet

It's the damn SUV's that speed! Civics, modified or not, speed just as much as other cars. This is racial car profiling! They only catch us, but the main culprits are the big navigators and grand cherokees who think they're all that; especially in the snow!

maybe they were referring to this :

these people have to learn that civics arent the fastest thing on the roads and that other people speed too. Most times its all types of cars. Not just civics.

well hell I'd love to get a radar gun and collect some stats cause unless it's bumper to bumper rush hour traffic then everyone is doing 120 or more, hell if you ain't doing 140 in the fast lane someone's bound to flash their high beams at you, and most of the time I end up moving over in a case like that to see a mini van fly past me..there are way more stock cars on the road that speed when compared to modified vechiles that speed...

lets take some precentages just to have some fun

first lets assume there is a car base of 100,000 cars in the sample

secondly assume 50% of modded cars speed

third assume 25% of stock cars speed

fourth 5% of the car base is modded cars (which seems right according to what I see on a daily basis)

ok that 50% looks alot bigger then the 25% in terms of each being a percent of the base yes there seems to be a huge problem with modded cars speeding

however lets figure out what this means in terms of numbers car base is 100,000 for this example

100,000 x 0.05 = 5000 (5000 modded cars means 95,000 stock cars)

5,000 modded cars 50% of them speeding well thats 2500 speeders

95000 stock cars 25% of thenm speeding thats 23750 speeders

ok so modded cars have a higher percentage of speeders, labelling them as a "higher risk group" however on a whole in terms of number there are more stock cars speeding then modded cars...so thats where cops should target their radar guns. I personally think import tuning has "grown up" from the days of street racing and politians and reporter *** kissers just are too far behind the times... I for one go the speed limit and whether my car is stock or not doesn't change that once my car is finished with all the mods I plan on doing then I'll still drive the speed limit.. some people need some serious help.

Does he have statistics or proof that most speeders are young or have a modded vehicle. That's such b.s, every time im on the highway there's always older people speeding or older women in bmw's and mercedes. It's a mixed bunch, he can't just generalize all youngsters and modded vehicles. Truthfully, most of the modded vehicles I see on the road drive speed limit except in Woodbridge.
The title of this article "Police target teens in honda civics"
Why just civics, what about all the other modded vehicles on the road, so when he mentions modded vehicles does he just mean civics?? This article is absurd

1sicsol maybe he's talking about this exhaust

i dunno
on the 401 i see ppl in shitty old Caravans speeding and FLYING past me at like 160kmh and im doing 120kmh
and i know for a FACT that i can speed like crazy in my mom's oldsmobile and not get pulled over just look at all the family cars that are out there and look at how they drive cause they know that the cops aren't watching them..

OR when that cop pulled me over and the van infront of him was PULLING away from us in a 50 zone and im going 50 and he pulls me over to ask me POWER QUESTION about my car
fooking morons not looking at the mini van that was speeding away infront of him

I wonder how this stuation would be like if old people drove modded civics.

Kind of like the old guys that drive the classic muscle cars.

Good to see you guys saw my post on Clubsi, now I don't have to make a new post on here. Hopefully they will print my response, I just got pretty pissed off when I read that letter and had to e-mail in a response.

For those of you that didn't see the post on Clubsi, here is the response I e-mailed back to the Star:

This is in response to the letter written by Mr. Patrick Neals in the Feb22/03 Yourview section of Wheels. His references to modified cars having “tailpipes big enough to hold a watermelon”, “suspension lowered to the point of being dangerous”, etc. are all overly dramatic and very exaggerated in my opinion. Sure, there are cars out there that have modifications done to them in poor taste and some that have illegal and unsafe work done to them, but it seems to me that he is trying make all modified cars out to be unsafe and dangerous vehicles, which is far from the truth. From my own experience (I own a modified Acura 1.6 EL) and those of friends and acquaintances with modified cars, this is definitely not the case. Most enthusiasts like myself take great pride in their cars and maintain them better than the average automobile owner. If anything, I think the more dangerous and unsafe vehicles on the road are not modified at all, instead they are completely stock cars and trucks that are not properly maintained.

In response to his statement that “the chances of the owner of such a car speeding, against the chances of an owner of an average non-modified family sedan, are many times greater”, again I wonder where exactly he is driving, or is that he remembers the speeding modified car more so than the countless speeding non-modified cars, SUVs, and minivans that I seem to see everyday on the 401 and elsewhere. It is true that the police seem more interested in modified cars, and justified or not, this factor seems to make most enthusiasts, myself included, more prone to making sure that we are obeying all rules of the road to avoid trouble in the first place. I’m not going to get into the whole issue of the police hassling those who drive modified cars, but it appears to me that it is attitudes like those of Mr. Neals and those I have seen in many forms of the media that have stereotyped us all as “streetracers”. Mr. Neals sure sounds to me like a keen supporter of Bill 241 and someone that would like to see all types of vehicle modifications made illegal, but where did all of this come from, happening to notice a modified car or two speeding or driving aggressively while somehow ignoring the far greater numbers of those with completely unmodified vehicles doing the same if not worse? By the way, I’m not some angry young kid with a “souped up car” either, I’m 26 years old with a completely clean driving record.
