Rosh Hashanah - Jewish New Year and day of reckoning.

For the religiously observant, Rosh Hashanah is followed by ten days of self-examination and repentance for one's wrongs in the previous year against God and one's fellow man.

No. It's a solemn religious occasion for the observant Jew, and not the celebration that we usually associate with Jan 1 New Year.

Purim is the boozefest. ;-)

No, but was fgood friends with one who just happened to be quite observant. His was a very regulated life. It seemed like there was a religious requirement or prohibition on virtually every facet of his life. At times I was quite surprised that he was even permitted to associate socially with me, goyim that I am.

Do a google search on "ask a rabbi" or "ask the rabbi". You'd be amazed at the degree of detail or legalisms in Jewish religious law as it applies to the most minute details of daily living.
