In anycase, I think they are worth it...they really set off a show car, look nice on a pimped out ride...I can just imagine the way my plates would look on 300C or Escalade

Random plates are only worth returning if you still have remaining months on that plate. i.e. your birthday is in November and you are selling your car in May. So you get 6 months of registration fee back.
If it is only a month or you are doing a direct transfer upon lease due or whatever, the plate is useless. The plate number will be erased from the system because it is no longer registered. If, by any chance, those plates are used and got caught, I don't know what kind of fine you will be given but the original owner won't be bothered, unless you are stupid enough to use your old plates.
Anyway, it is not a big deal.
