i self taught so i can drum pretty good,

i listen to alot of alternative, hip/hop so i can drum those beats easily...

i say listen to alot of music.... that helps big time.
very hard to explain it over the internet, you woould need someone to show u the ropes or just go with the flow....

make sure the beats fit in with the song, meaning drums rolls by hitting snare, toms, floor toms, all sound reasonably good!

p.s i like off beat drumming beats,,,, like dashboard confessional

just listen to songs... play by ear... you'll get the knack of it...

I was playing for a couple of years and then decided to take lessons. The only thing I really learned was how to read notes and a few fills/drum rolls. Later on I lost focus and found myself playing by ear again and quit the lessons. My suggestion to you is practice the basics like alternates, doubles, and paradiddles then work from there not only on your drums but also on your ride cymbal and highhat.

Alternates: R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L

Doubles: R-R-L-L-R-R-L-L-R-R-L-L-R-R-L-L

Paradiddles: R-L-R-R-L-R-L-L-R-L-R-R-L-R-L-L-R-L-R-R-L-R-L-L

Any idiot can play these basics but only a few can play'em with consistent timing.

practice, practice, practice!!!

start off by listenening attentively to more simple fills in some of your favourite music. try to figure out which drums and cymbals are being used in the fill. learn the technique by air drumming or playing your kit - slowly at first. keep at it until you can play at the right tempo with ease. as you get used to playing the more simpler fills in songs, you can move on to the tougher ones. the more difficult the fill, the longer it will take to get the hang of it.

with drum rolls, just allow the sticks to bounce lightly off the snare or hi-hat... alternate left to right and vice-versa. practice over and over until you can do it without really having to think about it.

btw, i'm self taught also.

i listen to a variety of music - not just one or two styles... and each one has influenced my drumming in one way or another... mainly jazz.

I've been drumming since I was about 8 years old (drumming for 11 years now) and I have never taken a lesson before. I think it is something that has to come naturally, it is hard to train someone to have rhythm.

I started when I was about 7. I used to be really good then I stopped about 3 years ago. I eventually was told to loose interest because my parents hated me banging on them !

I lost interest in playing the drums simply cuz I can't find a good time to play'em. Someone is always complaining to stop the banging. But when I do get a chance to jam with some people I like to play reggae, funk and jazz.
