attn: tech-savy people

i have a 4 port wired router/print server at home for two desktops. i have recently been given a laptop for work and was wondering if there is some device/gizmo i can buy that will allow a wireless setup without all the cost of purchasing a wireless router and wireless PCI cards for the desktops and USB printer.

thanks for any input or ideas!

If you want wireless you're going to have to pay for wireless. You may be able to get an addon for your router.. or some sort of stand alone wireless network hub (not router).

your best bet is to call a supplier and find out.

i usually buy from canada computers at specific mall.. but it's hard to discuss options with them.. i don't know the unofficial language of scarborough anymore...

just call tigerdirect or futureshop (don't buy from FS though) and see what they have that they can suggest.

wireless routers are cheap......get ready thursday and watch for sales.....every other week FS or bestbuy have crazy sales on cheap ones for like $5.....or worst case you get one for like 30-50.....not that much for the functionality

Either your gonna have to go wireless, or get a wireless hub. It will be cheaper to get a wireless router any ways. Check out www.canadacomputers.com

yes get an access point, connect that to on of your routers port, and that will give you wireless signal, Jeff make sure you get wireless G atleast if you want good signal and faster transfer rate.

Yes, you can attach a wireless router to your current wired router and just expand upon it. There is no need to set everything up all over again. Just plug the wireless router's uplink/internet port into one of the wired router's 4 computer ports and you will be fine.

Cheers.

attach a wireless access point (much like the ones found in colleges/universities) and connect to that.

find out the price of a wireless router + card and then make your decision. Just remeber theres 2 types wireless G and B, ones faster uses usb 2.0 the other is slower around 50kbps. sometimes a land line is best for home if you dont have to put down alot of line, or walk around with the computer

that is also an option. the router setup is in the room next to mine. i can easily run an ethernet cable across (through the wall) with minimal problems.
