if you don't tell him, he'll never know.
old saying: "ask, and you shall recieve"
or
Maybe if you start focusing on your job and performance levels more you might get promoted to an office of your own. then you won't have these petty little issues.

I'm assuming when he's doing all the eating and drinking that its some sort of lunch time, just get up and go for a walk or have your lunch at the same time elsewhere and make friends.
if not, just tell your supervisor or boss about it, and tell him it "distracts you from performing at your full potential" and see how your boss will shove a cucumber down that guys throat.

I go to McMaster University...and studying in the library there is like studying in a shopping mall.
Crunching, slurping, clickity clickity typing, cell phones, quiet study area door slamming, foreign languages (for some reason people like to talk louder when its not English to display to everone else that they are different)...
the university does a lousy job of enforcing any standards...
so what do i do?
ear plugs!
what annoys me, however, is people who tap their feet or women who keep flopping their legging over their knee...
i know the feeling! when you're patience is thin and concentration on boring tasks are necessary, distractions can be infuriating....
what Bruce says, go ask him politely to stop
if he doesn't stop use any of Cynikal's suggestions.

^^^ LOL!! I actually had one of those before, but it was made of the same material as cubicles! Then they got rid of it to promote more face to face interaction and what not...
That's what I'm aiming for man, but you gotta get thru the sh*t to get to the gold, and that's what I'm going thru now

Lots of good suggestions given already..........is there any possible way you can turn the desk so that you're not able to visually see his annoying habits and then drown him out with music from your iPod?
I once worked with a woman who wore the absolute cheapest, throat-choking, smothering perfume in great quantities. Politely mentioning that the smell was a little strong for the office, she wasn't offended...maybe just a little stung for the moment, but that passed quickly. She was a decent person and perhaps, wasn't even aware of it.
It had to be said, but kindness worked. They say that you, "catch more flies with honey than with vinegar".

dude, invest in some ear plugs. that's what i used to do when studying in open concept areas where ppl were ridiculously and unnecessarily loud...right in front of all the supervisors too whose office spaces were within the open concept office. but at least they had doors. the students had to deal with the same damn loud ppl everyday in this huge office. there's this one lady that is so offensively loud ALL THE TIME...and once she actually had the audacity to tell me and my labmates to keep it down when it was a rarity that we ever had conversations let alone loud ones. i dont like her.
but now i have my own office and i'm soooo thankful for that. if it gets loud outside, i just close my door.

anywhere. shoppers drug mart, the grocery store. there are different kinds too. i like the spongy ones (white or beige coloured) b/c they're easier to put in as opposed to the more squishy ones (the orange cone shaped ones) b/c those are hard to get right in the ear.
i sleep with ear plugs every night too b/c i'm such a light sleeper.
