BC allowed to sue tobacco companies
did anybody else here about this http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20050..._tobaco_health
apparently now the BC government is allowed to sue tobacco companies for health costs incurred.
I think this is completely moronic, the government is saying that they are allowed to sell cigarettes, but will be sued for it. People know about the health effects of cigarettes, if people want to smoke the additional cost to the health care system should be passed along to them (the consumer), not the companies selling them (threw taxes which they already are), or they should be made illegal to be sold in Canada, you can't have it both ways. As much as I don't respect the tabacco companies for thier advertising initiaves over the years, they didn't do anything illegal. Yet another typical government revenue machine.

A recent documentary shows an ex-smoker who had lung cancer went through surgery and basically lost his left lung, but survived. The overall surgery costed 400,000 dollars CDN.
What that means is this money all came out of our tax dollars (well, including those who smoke as well) and according to study, smoking related diseases cost Canadian about 4 billions annually in medical expense.
Apparently, smoking less (the so-called "cutting down") won't make you inhale less harmful chemical and make you live a little longer. I am an ex-smoker, quitted 2 years ago cold-turkey. I enjoyed the 10 years of my smoking life but study has shown, that smoking can increase chances of other diseases so for better or worse, I wish I can have a somewhat decent retirement life afterwards without any major problems.
I can't ask anyone to quit, cause I once smoked.

if it wasn't a huge profit machine it'd have been made illegal decades ago..

what i don't get though is this. isn't the government collecting taxes (higher then 15% too?) on smokes, so shouldn't that large sum of money be spent on the health costs incurred. i don't smoke and i think ****in right, sue tabacco companies for distributing a product that kills people...but, its alittle late by oh i donno 80 years or so to start complaining now, why didn't they do something about it then.
also this tabacco companies cannot sponsor events, thats retarded, its a business sponsoring events like F1 in Montreal, but they say it promotes smoking seing a product name. lame.
its dumb**** politicians who cannot think of a way to save their asses....kinda like the music recording industry.
if BC sues and wins, there is caselaw that will enable Ontario and everyone else to sue and win...caselaw from this one case will be precedent for the rest of Canada...but this matter will be tied up in the courts for years and years on appeals as it already has to even see if BC is allowed to sue.

look at this from this point of view, Smokes at the border cost $40/box of DuM....and at the store $80+/box of DuM, so dont u think the gov't makes enuff money already taxing people, ****en morors, and all this health money that they are complaining about comes from the people not the ****en morons in the gov't. So what the **** are they talking about....just a thought from a NON-smoker here....

you have to remember that the people who are getting sick now did not know the harmful effects of smoking when they started. as for he people who have started smoking in teh last 15 years thats just dumb. in my opinion they should make all drugs legal and let darwin take over. just because they legalize heroin doenst mean youll find me passed out in a back alley with a needle in my arm. most things in moderation are ok. but if you drink a case of beer or pack of cigarettes every day for years its gonna catch up to you. even too much water can kill you. my dad started smoking when he was 13 smoked till he was 53 then quit cold turkey. he would have been 70 this year...

This law is about as dumb as suing McDonalds for "making" you fat. Next they will be after alcohol companies for pickling peoples livers....
It doesnt matter when you started smoking (before of after the knowledge we have about it)...if you cant figure out that inhaling smoke into your lungs is a bad idea then please repeat grades 1-12.
and to add to an earlier comment...i think it would be a bad idea to legalize marijuana. Why?? because theres going to be a good chunk of people who will abuse the right to be high, and will be doing at completely innapropriate times and situations. We dont need that. and yes, i smoke (not cigarettes)
