The Beer Store...
Hey guys!
Guys a question while im here guzzlin some beers, why doenst the province give out licenses out to convinience store to sell beers?
Since i move out here from montreal, i dont understand the logic behind it. Is it to prevent people to drink late? That would be the only logical explanation i would have but a dumb one, anyone can hit a bar or club or buy 2 24's and get f*cked...
That is one thing i miss from quebec is buying my beer at 10:58pm a the store around the corner!
What do you think?

it is a little odd......but i think it also is part of an attempt to prohibit(spl) underage drinking.....
it's always easier to get the guys at the coner store to accept fake id then it is and beer stores and such.....that's alwayst what i think....

well yeah, i did thin about that, but there is no diferent between that guy with a summer job at the beer store than the owner of the corner store...
there are task team out there to prevent tabaco sales to minors, they can do the same for booze. I say the governement is ****ing greedy. Correct me if im wrong but is the beer store not a privately own company/org by the gov?

i'm not really sure about that....personally i really don't care.....prices are usually the same everywhere, and as long as they provide liquor/beer, who really cares? the drink in the end is what is important! lol

yeah true that, but the thing is, the comodity factor here.
Im lucky, i have a beer store 2 block from where i live. But i know places that you would either have to take at 15 minute tcc ride or walk a while to get beer, compared to having a corner store.... every corner!
Yes, you can say: buy your beer before hand. But for example, i usually work evening shifts, and i dont get off work before 10pm, well can you believe its to late because the beer store is closed!?!? thats bullcrap! or lets say saturday morning im doing a 9 to 6 shift, im too early AND too late for beer, thats utter bullcrap!
Compare to when i was im quebec, i could get beer from 7am to 11pm monday to sunday, 365 days a year!!
Anyhow....
Thats my rant

some beer stores are open till 11pm on friday and saturdays...for people like me its a curse and a blessing...i curse the non-convinent factor but it saves me so much problems haha...not to mention the fact that most people buy their beers/alcohols before they party so we outta the house well and way drunk by 11pm anyways

I dont think because they government is greedy..they're going to make the money of the booze whether you like it or not. I think its the underage thing and a a way to control alcohol consumption.
Like cynikal said, some beer stores and the lcbo are open till 11...I can think of 3 in my area (backhome) where they're open late, its not big of a deal..

Actually the Beer Store is owned together by Molson, Labatt and Sleeman. But the Brewers Warehousing Company is the technical name for it. It works along side the Government but is not 'owned' by the Government. The LCBO on the other hand is. It is just that the different boards that are run by the Government make the rules and thus that is how they control them. I don't drink so, I could really care less. =)

Good info, Rajun! The LCBO is one the world's largest control board, and due to their size and buying power, they have first dibs on a lot of different types of alcohol. Now, not only is it a cash cow for the provincial government, it also helps to prevent some of underage purchasing of alcohol and just robbery in general. I know that it sucks that you can't purchase alcohol late at night, but is alcohol more important than safety?

It so the province can make money. The Quebec government gets so much ******* money from the Federal government that they don't need to make any money on there own. Where as the hard working Ontario Government does not get so much money from the Federal Government and therefore have to do such things as regulated liquor sales to make some money for Health care and other social programs. Answer your question???

Oh and btw, youre wrong about quebec not making money on its own, quebec is the most taxed province. We have it very good here in ontario my friend.

4 of my friends and i took a trip to montreal for 3 days and the majority of the trip there we were hanging around in convenience store parking lots getting hammered. so this is definately not a good idea because lets just say when the police approaches you and start talking to your in french and your laughing they definately do not take kindly to that and running from them between alley ways is not a good way to end up back to your car if you dont know where you are.

I actually support the idea of controlled alcohol distribution. If it was privatized and convenience stores started selling it, then a lof of stupid kids would start getting drunk at every corner, places would get robbed a lot more and it would just bring more chaos to some neighbourhoods.
I'd much rather pay a dollar or two extra and keep it government controlled.
But hey, that's just me.

Does Quebec have problems with robberies, underage drinking, etc? If not then I guess it could be possible for Ontario to start selling booze in convenience stores. Does every other province distribute alcohol through the government like Ontario Except for Quebec?
