i have many friends who have quit but couldnt last longer than a month. I guess they all start up again because everyone else and their dog smokes too. So...cold turkey with a strong commitment to it is the only way (i've seen it work)

i stopped for a few reasons:

1. its a BS habit
2. too expensive
3 being healthy was more important

the number one reason, aside from willpower, was not hanging around so much with smokers. i just did it cold turkey and have been mostly clean since last august. i say mostly because i still have one once in a while, but i dont have any cravings for them anymore.

Yeah but the nicotine is out of your system in 2-3 weeks. I found the cravings cut down 75% after the first 2 weeks. At work on breaks i would just eat some fruit or yogourt to help prevent weight gain. But its going to happen.

And to answer euro_civic's question. You will gain weight, because smoking gives you a lose of appetite (well atleast that's what I heard) Also when you quit smoking you tend to eat way more and try to shove as many things into your mouth as possible to stop the urge. So i say, yes you will gain some weight.
Yeah b/c food tastes so much better once you quit. Some taste buds grow back or something. I noticed that i eat different foods and use less salt since i've quit smoking. I smoked for 9 years and quit about 1.5 years ago and am grateful that i actually had the will to quit.
I consider quitting smoking to be one of my greatest accomplishments in life, along with graduating college in the states. But my diploma hasn't got me ****....i went to school for graphic design, but now i work on cars.
Good luck with trying to quit....gum really helped me.

yup, i also heard about something with your taste buds coming back or becoming stronger or something of that nature.. anyways, just TRY to eat healthy food when trying to quit, just like zeeman said. Fruit/yogurt/vegetables.

10+ years smoker, quitted cold turkey 2 years ago. Had some odd second hand smoke here and there due to friends but never once did I pick up a cigarette after.

If you believe you can do it, then you can. There is no way around it.

Hey, I smoked 1/2 pack (full pack on weekends).... for about 5 years... the ill effects of smoking are so gradual that i never really noticed.

i was thinking about quitting for a little more than the last year... i was tired of having a scratchy throat, heavy lungs, smelling like smokes, etc.

i found i was coming up with stupid excuses like how much i like my skull zippos, etc.. i smoked on a schedule at work instead of whenever i wanted for a while, but that kind of cutting down didn't help.

One day, i just got fed up with being an addict, i smoked the remainder of my pack and decided I was done. It's been about 8 months i guess.

i had a few cigarettes in vegas, in florida, a few on a 'trip' in the woods, i've had maybe 6 while camping/cottaging all sumer, and i smoked on vacation last month (that was a bad idea)

i am very happy i stopped, but i do miss smoking. and realize this, smoking is cool.

the first week, i got really sick. after about 6 days, i started to feel better, but then i got a headache which lasted 5 days.. and it was the worst headache i've ever had in my life... i had to take advil's at every interval (i usually don't pop pills), the third week things were looking on the up and up, but i still felt like crap.. after that though... i was okay.

i had a congested sinus at times, was spitting out like of 'lung butter' and my lungs would feel really heavy at times.. this is normal...

also don't be surprised if you get a bunch of canker sores on your gums. your body is going through a rough time.

it takes about 3 months for your blood to get back to normal... that's the point when your chemical addiction will trying be gone.

i also stopped going to patio bars, and such.

i still go get drunk and cause ruckus, i just do it without a cigarette in my mouth. it's doable!!

feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

oh, don't read up on anti-smoking propoganda... especially gov't ones... they're so stupid.. they only made me want to smoke.

like that ad on tv where the idiot is eating bleach with cereal saying there are more chemicals in cigarettes...

you can't compare the two.

cyanide is one molecule.

coffee has more chemicals in it than cigarettes.

i would much rather drink a cup of coffee and smoke a pack of cigarettes than ingest/smoke 1/100 of that in cyanide.

there is only one thing that will help/make you quit.

yourself.

you are your only true ally.

Willpower is the best thing you can do. Be strong and just forget about it totally. Lock the smoker part of your brain away and focus on other things. Its the best way.
