Yea that was a long wait eh, lol
I hear a lot of the younger fans have dropped blink from the bands they "love" lol. I had my friend who loves blink write up a lil spiel about your comment Civic_boy, its pretty lengthy, and it might start a flame war, so I won't post it unless you want to read his point of view on it.

i'd post it anyways greg... i think some of blinks older cd were better as a whole... the new cd has a lot more of mark and tom singing in unison kinda like pathetic way back on dude ranch... all in all its a decent cd though...

it'd probably sound better if i was watching them at the phoenix on dec 2nd though

Ok here you guys go:

"Hey Greg:

I doubt you have any use for this. It's long man.

I was asked by a close friend to produce a rant on why blink-182 didn’t sell
out. First I asked myself, why? I wasn’t going to waste time describing
something to people who have little knowledge of the music industry anyways.
But in ode to Blink, here it is:

Let’s start off with discussing the term “sell-out”. When a band achieves
success, something any human yearns in life, it’s considered selling out. In
Blink’s case, they have been successful. In fact, they even went gold in
India. In short, these are some of the reasons why Blink haven’t sold out:

1. They decided to take their music in a different direction after Dude
Ranch. With the addition of Travis Barker, they decided not to record the
same drum track and use the same chords on every track of the record. Since
they did decide to do something different, it shows their credibility as
musicians. That’s a part of music. If a writer wrote 14 different versions
of the same book, but claimed each book was different, he’d lose all
credibility as a writer. Since Blink did decide to grow as musicians, they
proved to be true to music and therefore, are more “real” than other bands
who write the same thing over and over.

2. Enema of the State was heavily pop; however, ask any song writer and they
will tell you pop is not the easiest thing to write. It involves melodies,
harmonies, and tempo-change ups. The perfect example: The Beatles. They had
simple songs, but achieved such great success with melodic songs. Now I ask,
were The Beatles sell-outs?

3. Blink got signed to MCA/Universal: a major label. Many claim this is
selling out. I say it’s actually being able to put food on your table. It
also proves you are true to your music if you want it to be exposed to as
many people as possible. Only major labels have the power to expose your
music on a global level. Many bands are on Indie labels for one reason: they
can’t get signed to a major.

4. Travis is a good drummer. Scott wasn’t. Travis doesn’t do the same
redundant drumming on every song like Scott did. Punk drummers are fast, but
since when was quality determined by speed? Blink’s pop sound was related
to leaving punk drumming in every song behind. But it resulted in better
drumming, better fills, and better songs.

5. The record label makes a lot of decisions, not the band. If Blink is on
a Teenie Bopper magazine, it doesn’t mean they made that decision. Their A &
R director at the label makes that decision. Blink shows up for the photo
shoot. Many times, the band doesn’t know what they’re doing the shoot for.
It’s something called promotion, or for those of you who have not been
exposed to such words, it means A-D-V-E-R-T-I-S-I-N-G. Promotion = more
record sales = more money to the label = more opportunity to record for your
fans.

6. The Dollar Bill Tour. A band who can sell out a 30,000 seat show but
decides to leave their family behind and tour for $1 a ticket, playing small
clubs hasn’t sold out. Blink actually had to convince the label to allow
them to do a show for so cheap. They will not make profit, or even break
even on this tour. They will lose a lot of money.

7. The new blink record. It once again proves that blink is different and
has left pop-punk behind. They have grown as musicians. All effects on the
record are authentic, not digitally produced. For example, reverb was
achieved by playing some of the song into a shower and recording them.

8. Blink has done very well. I agree. But that’s not a reason for selling
out. They don’t individually control the 15 million people who have bought
their records. Doing well has given them the financial stability to start
their own film production company, Resting Bird (a division of Atticus) so
they can showcase smaller bands and expose these bands.

9. The word sell-out does not make any sense. Blink’s success allows their
label to keep them on and put out records for their fans. Blink would not
have a record deal if people didn’t want to listen to their music.

10. Blink is better than you are! So stop whining about how they sold out.
You are probably just jealous because your not good at guitar, your band
sucks, and your girlfriend would rather have sex with a picture of blink
than look at you.

So Cheers! Stop saying “sell-out” and just enjoy the music that’s out there.
Your opinion is worthless! I bet you think “emo” is real. Back to my school
work on the music industry. Maybe some day you’ll understand. Until then,
I’m better than you are."
