I bought my crx off of ebay, picked it up in Flint Michigan. It was an Indiana car most of its life though, thats why its in great shape !
Paid some taxes at the border..Funny thing is that I was driving it with Michigan Plates ... no registration, no insurance ! I was so dumb for risking it though...LOL It worked out well..
I paid $3200 USD + The RIV fee, I paid taxes based on $1000 (made up Bill of sale) ... thats all.

You need to get a letterhead letter from a dealer in th U.S. of the car manufacturer stating that there are no more recalls left to do on that particular car.. You must show this letter to Canadian tire when you do the inspection to federalize the car in Canada.
Very easy.

what "recalls" means in this case?

recalls means something wasn't done right and its the manufacturer's responsiblity to fix something....... so your car gets call back to fix something under warranty........ (might have word myself bad, but that's the general idea)...

I'm in the same situation, I want to drive a car home, but I have no idea what plates I need to do this. I know about all the other stuff, but how the hell do you get plates?? I'll be driving from Texas so I'm not risking just using any plates.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Importin a car from the US 101.
section 1 (cars over 15 years old)
cars over 15 years old are not restricted entery into canada, they do not need to be inspected to meet cnd safety standards... day time running all that BS... want a JDM car... check out www.Importconcern.ca
Cars not over 15 years Old.
1. Car needs to be on the "Approved List" available here http://www.riv.ca/english/US_vehicle_admissibility.pdf
2. check Modification requirements
- Recalls -- obtained at any dealer showing no outstanding recalls on the car
- All compliance labels must be present, if any missing a letter from the Dealership is required stating everything is in compliance
- Need a 17 digit VIN
- A metric Spedo
- Daytime running light (all cars not yet 15 year old)
- Infant Restraint ( all cars not yet 15 years old)
- 8km/h Bumpers
- French airbag labels (available at any dealerships)
then the car mus pass all the provincial inspection and/or emmissions tests.
3. U.S. Customs neet the require paper work & notification of export AT LEAST 72 hours before the car leaves the US.
http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/export/export_docs/motor_vehicle.xml
after the 72 hours the car needs to be presented to the US Border for inspection, and have all documentation in hand for export.
4. at the canadian border
Show Bill of sale, title and Registration papers
- fill in this form http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4140/rc4140-e.html
and pay 182$ fee
- they will check to make sure the car is on the Accepted list
- then you pay taxes on the car
5. after 10 days you will receive a Federal inspection form telling you what need to be done to the car. you have 45 days to do these modification and get the car inspected. by canadian tire for compliance.
if the car passes it then can be title in canada, and you will receive conpliance stickers in the mail in 10 day with instructions on how to install them.
if the car FAILS and does not meet the deadline the car needs to be re-exported to the US at your cost and you loose the money you spent on taxes and fees.
Pretty Simple right ?
Driving the car back is not a good Idea... when we do it we tow it back on a Dolly... but if you can arrange for a Transit marker and insurance you would be legal... sorta.
