Camera Question

I got a Canon Power Shot s1 IS camera. For some reason it doesnt want to turn on anymore. Camera was working perfectly fine with no problems before but now it decided to die on me I think. I tried everything I know of ie. recharge batteries, use a different battery, try picture mode, try viewer mode still didnt work. Anyone know what the problem could be? never dropped it or anything either. Btw how good i this camera? Is it worth taking it to a camera shop and have them repair it?

definitely not worth to give it in for repairs. the repair estimate/cost will easily outrun the value of the model you mentioned. i bought a digi from futureshop long time ago with extended warranty and similar thing happened to it...just died one fine day....was not dropped or anything. it was repaired under warranty and on the invoice it said....blown internal circuit which is normal for these sensitive devices.

they replaced the IC and the invoice said....i guess $90 for the part and $80 for the labor charge.

thats true but if it costs 170 to fix and this camera is worth it meaning i cant find another camera in the same price range to fix with the same features or even better i might aswell fix it. i am not into hardcore photography or anything so anything good will do...

since it is out of any warranty...any camera shop will charge you a check-up fee before they provide you with an estimate for a repair. so add that to the estimated price....plus then after all said is done...and you are roughly $200 out, it can happen again and you will still have a repaired camera...u know what i mean.

the new s3 is now retailing for $400, s2 and s1 are all discontinued so an s1 would definitely not worth more than $200 these days.

its more than likely a power supply issue due to a dry solder joint that may have cracked...could be a cheap, easy fix or could be expensive...either way the labour to take a camera like that apart is gonna be pretty expensive and will more than likely cost around 200bucks to fix...its a good camera, the s3 is nice aswell...and for the price of new cameras coming down you're really better off buying a new one.

infact only dslr cameras are worth getting fixed as they are made of replaceable components opposed to pressed circuit boards and cheap components.

Hey, why don't you give Cannon customer service a call. I broke a Kodak while on vacation a couple of years ago. I called them up and they offered me the next model up for $100 including batteries, dock and case (it was selling at Costco for $299 camera alone). I had no warranty on it. The camera was purchased from a member of torontoaccords.com, was two years old and I came right out and told the guy I broke it. I was just looking for a repair facility and he offerd me a new camera. They do afterall want to keep your business.

If you are going to fix it I would suggest taking it right to Canon head office in mississauga rather then a store. They fix cameras on site there, and seem to be quite easy to deal with.
