so pretty much i can get any cell phone and unlock it to any company i want to? cause i wanna switch to fido and i went on the web site and the cell phones they are offering i kinda don't like them. can somebody tell me if i can get any cell(gsm) with a sim card and unlock it to fido

no, you can't get any cell phone and unlock it not all cell phones work like that

Almost all GSM cell phones can be unlocked for use with any GSM provider assuming you have an active sim card with them.

As long as the phone you wish to unlock is a GSM phone, and has the North American frequencies, you should be fine.

Just make sure it has the 850 freq, otherwise you will get crappy reception
