I hooked up a dlink di604 to my computer using sympatico and XP professional. It worked fine for a few weeks until I was running some spyware remover and the computer locked. Thinking that it might help if i wasn't on the net, turned off the modem. After turning it back on the router doesn't work anymore. I tried reseting and reprogramming, adding networking components, formating the system, everything to no effect. But, if i unplug the router and plug the modem in straight no probs. I took it back and the guy hooked it up at the store and it worked fine. Went home same problem. Bought another router same problem. After you physically connect the router, you go into explorer, put in the IP address of the router, then you are supposed to get the setup. Instead my computer does nothing!
Any sugesstions would be greatly appreciated.

man thats weird
I was going to say router, because my gf had the same one in her residence at school and it went down, and i emailed dlink and ruled it the router was dead, but since you took it back i guess it has to be your comp.
Have you tried doing an update on the formware and seeing if it can connect that way to the router?

I can connect to the net straight through the motem, but not at all with the router. I tried plugging into my sisters labtop and it said sheridan wired 100mb/s etc. But wont do anything in explorer, Kazaa or anything!

there used to be an issue running rogers high speed issues w/ dlink routers. They for the longest time never had a firmware updates... I'm not sure if your using rogers but it might be something to think about... as well check for software updates from dlink...

Hard reset...
ipconfig /all at cmd.
Set yourself up as a static address on the same subnet as the router.
192.168.150 or 10.0.0.10
Can you hit it then?
If the router works I can fix it for you at your house..
For a fee..

I'm using Rogers and a Dlink 704P router... never had to do a firmware upgrade. Be careful when doing a firmware upgrades. They say only to do it if you're experiencing specific problems. You mentioned that you took it back to the store and it worked fine.
If you do upgrade, MAKE SURE you're using the correct version... "Firmware is not interchangeable!". Different firmware for different revisions.
Below is taken straight from the Dlink website FAQ (this is for "General Routers", cuz I don't know your revision, Brett... I only copied the first couple things to try):
Make sure you have Java enabled and are using an updated web browser. We recommend the following:
Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher
Netscape 6 or higher
Mozilla 1.2.1 (5.0) or higher
Opera 6.0 or higher
Safari 1.0 or higher (with Java 1.3.1 or higher)
Camino 0.7 or higher
To resolve difficulties accessing a D-Link model that has a web utility, please follow the steps below.
Step 2 Disable any internet security software running on the computer. Software firewalls like Zone Alarm, Black Ice, Sygate, Norton Personal Firewall, Windows XP firewall, etc. might block access to the configuration pages. Check the help files included with your firewall software for more information on disabling or configuring it.
Try these and see, then I'd say check out the FAQs on the website.

are you running a firewall??
sounds like the router is probably still okay as i don't know of any way you can write to it's brains w/o linking in thru IE..
sounds like you've blocked your system one way or another from recognizing the router as a channel to the outside world

In this order do the following:
Turn off all three, computer, router and DSL modem.
Turn on DSL modem, router and computer
Reset the settings on your router.
Ensure you have proper IP address on all systems, and proper subnets (DLink uses 192.168.x.x typically). Following that, restart the router while leaving the DSL modem on.
Routers have no rotating parts, nor do they download new information. The reason I say this, is if you were to leave it sitting there without tampering with it, it will not 'wear-out' or stop working unless there is interaction with the end user.
If you are able to access the config page on the router, and you can connect to the net directly using your DSL modem, the only logical problem is either a miss-configuration of your TCP/IP Settings or entering the wrong settings into the router. Try manually setting your desktop IP stats to the following:
IP: 192.168.0.x (x being anything buy 0,1, or 255)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.01
I am going to assume that is not the problem though as you are able to connect to the router, but it might help to try that.
