Computer tech question
My bro just bought a laptop, and wireless router to hook up to my rogers@home. I've installed everything, and followed all directions, but my rogers won't work on my PC when the router is plugged in. What's up with that?>

were you using rogers on a desktop machine in your house before you got the laptop? if so...
did you release the IP on the desktop machine before unhooking it and hooking the modem into the router?

I know people are going to say it's hooked up wrong, but I followed all the directions
So, i'm not totally sure what to do. Also, in my ethernet card there is only one female outlet to plug in the cable from my modem, but the there is a cable from the router that needs to be plugged in there as well, so I have to keep switching back and fourth.
Sorry, i'm kind of a computer newb
Anyways, any help appreciated, thanks!

Yeah I was using rogers on a desktop machine before i got the laptop.
I'm not sure what you mean about releasing the IP on the machine though, sorry im not good with computers.
In the instructions it gave all the hands on installation stuff as step 1, 2 and 3, so I guess that means I hooked it up before I did any of the actual installing software, ect... on my PC.
Not sure if this answers your question though

But to make it simple, when you used your desktop comp with rogers, it assigned that computer a unique IP address so it could use the rogers service, now that you unplugged it without releaseing the IP from that comp, when your router goes to get an IP address to act like your desktop comp on the net it cant because rogers stillt hinks ur desktop comp owns that IP and wont give the router a new one untill the desktop says thats enough im offline now.
So you got to hook up your old desktop back to the modem, and go on the net.
once on the net depending on what software your using go int
WIN98
Start >> Run
type in WINIPCFG
and click RELEASE ALL
or in windows 2000 go to START >> RUN
and type in CMD
once in the command prompt type in
ipconfig /release_all
once thats done hook up your router and configure it and it should grab a new IP and be off and running.

Once your router seems to work fine then RENEW ALL back on your desktop comp to get a new LAN IP address from the router, then you shoul dbe back up and running.

Sorry guys...
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong...
Get the MAC address from the network card that was plugged in before the router.
Log into router..
Goto clone MAC address..
Enter MAC address from desktop into router..
Hit apply..
Try connecting with the router again on Status page..
Rogers binds the MAC to the ARP table..

both of you are right. I guess the easiest way is to release and renew your ip (Start run, cmd.exe, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew). By renewing the ip adress, you don't have to re config your router. BTW: What wireless router is it, maybe it may have a different setup. Just my two cents.

ummm which wireless router did he get.... rogers/cogeco often use "lancity" network boxes that are not compatable with d-link wireless products... they work for a few minutes then die down... d-link as far as I know has not put out a patch for it and is still looking for a cause/solution... (we found out this problem 2 months ago at the comp shop I worked at... the promised a patch in 2 weeks )
