Crips and Bloods gangs agree to truce.
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Rival street gangs the Crips and Bloods have agreed to a truce in Newark, New Jersey, aimed at stemming the violence that has plagued the city and gone too far for even the gang members, officials said Tuesday.
The peace agreement, reached over the weekend, involved 150 members from several gang factions and laid out a 10-point plan including an immediate cease-fire.
The plan also asks gang members to refrain from using gang hand signals, graffiti or other symbols to incite the killing of rivals.
Under the truce, gang members also vowed to designate places like schools, churches and parks as neutral zones and to avoid encroaching on each other's territory without notice.
"Anything that will stem the violence is welcome. Time will tell how effective it is," said Kevin Rehmann, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police.
Newark Deputy Mayor Ras Baraka and the Nation of Islam helped mediate the truce, officials said.
The Crips and Bloods originated in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Crips often wear blue and Bloods red.
Members, who range in age from 13 to 40, often deal in drugs such as cocaine, heroin and marijuana and their rivalry has spawned years of bloodshed for both sides.
While local police declined to estimate gang membership, an FBI Web site estimates each gang has about 10,000 members nationwide.
An aide to Baraka said talks to draw up the peace deal began two months ago when gang members saw the movie "Redemption."
The film is about the life of Crips co-founder Stanley "Tookie" Williams, who now speaks out against violence from his cell on California's death row.
"These young men were tired of committing violent acts and being blamed for ones they didn't do," said David Muhammad, an aid to Baraka.
"[The truce] would give the whole community a sense of security. Grandmothers don't want children outside for fear of stray bullets," Muhammad said.

I cant imagine two gangs, who hate the **** out of each other, meeting as if it was two coporate companies to make some contracted laws of their own... Its kinda comical when u think about it.

It's funnier if you know how the gangs originated because they were actually friends back in the day.

During the summer of 1972, the Crips from Compton, and the Pirus had a conflict, and an all out rumble ensued. The Pirus were out numbered, and the Crips prevailed. The Pirus wanted to terminate peaceful relations with the Crips so they turned to the Lueders Park Hustlers for back-up. They agreed and a meeting was called on Piru Street. The Crips had murdered an L.A. Brim member earlier that year, so the Pirus asked the Brims to attend the meeting too. Others that attended were the Denver Lanes, and the Bishops1.
How to combat Crip intimidation was discussed along with the creation of a new alliance to counter the Crips. At that time the color of bandannas was not important, but since the Crips were known to wear blue bandanas, the Pirus and the other groups decided to discontinue the wearing of blue bandannas. They decided to take on the wearing of an opposite color, red, and created a united organization which later became known as the Bloods. The Pirus, Brims, Athens Park Boys, and Pueblos decided to unite with the Bloods, and soon after, other groups who had been threatened or attacked by Crips joined the Bloods.

this blood and crip thing is miniscule compared to whats goin on in the gaza strip. that has been goin on for thousands of years, this crap has been goin on for 40 years. this is about guns drugs and whos the tougher man, that is based on religion, and regional conflicts. they did this in la too a bunch of times, it wont work, because when u get down to it, its just a bunch of stupid guys who think guns make them tough. they sell drugs and shoot people to keep their market, unless you can stop the trafficing of drugs and weapons, it will never end.
