Pure stupidity, but not unheard of. Although I doubt that anyone would take one of our Civics on the road and smoke it....it would depend on the modifications you will have made on the car.
I have to admit, that given the opportunity to drive a brand new Cobra would be very appealing...if I were a mechanic who is the "Mustang specialist" it wouldn't be your last chance at driving one. What can I say, some people are just born stupid.

there is so many idiots and morones out there. plus reading the replys from other mustang owners there are many idiots and morones out there speeding and killing innocent victoms because of there stupidity.
if a stranger were to ever beat my car i wouldn't go to his manager, i would give him two black eyes and ill make him lick my exhaust system until it's spotless clean.

i used to work at an acura dealership, the oportunities are endless when it comes to joy rides, if at all possible stay at the dealership when you take your car there... Some people will ask the service advisor to take the car though, and if you ask something like... "Can you find out why is my TLs is hesitating when i shift from 4th to 3rd to pass someone", you are basically asking a mechanic to take your car and drive the crap out of it to find out what is wrong... sports cars i've had the luxury of driving while working there:
97 NSX T
S2000 (body shop car)
BMW M roadster (used car)
300ZX TT(trade in)
89 Supra (used car)
RSX type S
most of these cars were deliveries or for service at other shops (ie. winshield repair, refabricing, etc.)
the S2000 was a different story though... the guy was in his 40's and hadn't driven manual in decades, he was getting the roof repaired (electrical), and the shuttle wasn't going to be back soon enough to drive him home, he said he still (3000km) couldn't get used to driving a high reving car, so he asked ME to drive him back to his house and to keep the RPM's up so he could see how i shifted, when i dropped him off at his house HE THANKED ME and gave me 10 bucks, I thanked him and took it easy on the way back to the dealership... that was definately the highlight of my job there, i quit 2 weeks later... the car, not as fast as i thought it would be, not very comfortable either (maybe cause I'm 5' 11" though), but the car will turn and stop on a dime.
Just thought I'd share, I personally wouldn't take a car for the hell of it or drive the **** out of it, cause it's still your liscence and safety on the line... most service managers won't put up with that kind of ****.

funniest reply I saw was...
" am business man in Japan. I do however have posses great interest in extreme exotic machines. Over the years, I have greatly grown my self collection to now include nearly 60 cars from around the world. Most notibly, I too posses 2003 model Cobra SVT (among other FORD) that I recently imported specially from America. So I understand how you feel.
If any one of my service advisor would pull such a dishonarable act on one of my possessions I would expect him to perform ritial suicide for his dishonoring of his company reputation. "
I laughed I cried....it was great....
