I was in the U.S. about 3 weeks ago. I went to NYC by car and had no problems at the border. I do have a passport though, and personally I think you are better off with one. I have actually been to the U.S. numerous times over the past 2 years and have not had any problems crossing or even coming back for that matter.

Dude, the passport is not $60.00. It is $85.00. I just got mine today.

As for going to the States, you don't need the passport but like someone else also said, you need a government ID and a picture ID.

I crossed the border last summer to drive to NYC and then flew to the States again a couple of weeks later. Zero hassle about travelling with just my birth certificate and driver's license. The only trouble I experienced was at the airport and having to go through the metal detector numerous times... which was never explained why either. Maybe I have metallic parts inside my body or something!

If you don't have gov't issued photo id then I'd say just go get a passport coz it'll make it much easier for travelling abroad.
