The economy... has it affected you?

So we all know that the economy is crap right now and that many people have lost their jobs, businesses are closing, sales are down, etc.

But how does it affect you?

I work for Toyota at the plant in Cambridge. Right now and for the next few months, we are still working 5 days a week, but only building cars on 4 of those days. Sales are still decent compared to the Big3, so we still have many cars to build. I'm not overly concerned about losing my job, but I don't really want to use up vacation time if the plant stops production for a few weeks here or there. I don't think Toyota is going to go out of business anytime soon.

What about everyone else?

My company is an IT outsourcing firm, so we haven't been hit as hard as others. We have fixed bid a time and material contracts so we cover enough ground.

I work at a GM dealership...I dont think the sales dept sells anything these days, they just fired like 10 people here and I generally sit around all afternoon cuz there is no work...other than the plethora of warranty work.

I have a few family members that have lost their jobs at Magna (after 20 years).

A couple other friends who changed careers only to walk into this economic disaster, they have lost their jobs.

1 friend about to go belly up. Lost high salary job, backup savings is gone, mortgage.

I haven't been affected by the economy, and I don't think I will. My job has to do with maintaining our outsourced centres in business, so as long as there will be outsourced centres, I will always need to make sure that people there do what they are supposed to do.
Even if the business comes back, someone still needs to manage the business here, so I think I will be OK.
