i'm in for green... haha... just coz i heard on the radio that the green will get the cab drivers to all drive hybrids.... i think taxi drivers idle and pollute the environment more than anyone of us who warms up our ride in the morning

Is there no other Accountants in here (or people who know anthing about budgeting)??

In a non-profit scenerio (I'm assuming the Liberal Politicans are not trying to profit off our backs, benefit of the doubt), the actual financial position at the end of the period should come very close to the actual budget, and if the budget is off it should be adjusted.

Having billions of dollars in surplus at the end of the period, is just as bad as having a deficit. It means that they are either charging us way too much in taxes, or not paying the money back to the provinces for services. This is very bad fiscal management of our money. Have you not realized about what the provinces keep griping about "Fiscal Imbalance", so the Federal Liberals have made themselves look successful in Government sacrificing services provided by the provinces to you and me, by hourding our money.

Its interesting to see people say our Country is in a good position, when really it is just smoke and mirrors, tell that to the Cancer patients who die waiting for treatment. And those certainly are not the RICH cancer patients who are crossing the border and paying for service (getting it returned to them by OHIP), but the ones who live paycheck to paycheck. OR all 18 - 65 year olds who can no longer get eye care, physiotherapy, in Ontario because the Province cannot pay for it (don't get me started on that *******)...Good to know the Federal Liberals are going to have billions of dollars in surplus.

Let them pat themselves on the back again for running a great surplus, I see right through it.

Just my thought.. but if we are running a deficit then is this surplus not used to pay off the deficit? I can't see how spending more money and having to pay back the interest is as bad as running a surplus and not having to owe money. Please explain. I don't see how any of this has to do with accounting.. it has to do with economics.

But I see your point the budget should be balanced... but are you saying you'd rather just see money wasted for the sake of saying "OUr budget is balanced" I think its ok to run a surplus at times because atleast that leaves room for future promises. PC's plan to cut GST and somehow increase spending? I just don't see how that is going to happen. Paul Martin was the Finance Minister of Canada and was fairly succesfull.. I think he has some idea of what budgeting and accounting is.

Ok well here's one reason I can think of. If we only pay for PST then that would have us pay as much as America does and they don't have nearly as many social services as we do. SO if we get rid of GST how will the government afford to pay for things like Healthcare. My guess is, if they ever get rid of GST they are just going to tax the **** out of us through other products to make up the difference.

i'll tell you where they will afford it, they will use the money they take from me and everybody else EVERY YEAR in income taxes....the way its suppose to be...if its not enough, health care (and anyother government program) needs to be reformed (which it does) so there is less waste/corruption/stupid spending

GST is a bull**** tax that should be removed, I agree with Harper, cutting the GST will help the most amount of people too, poor and rich, because everybody buys stuff.....the liberals tax cuts will certainly leave some group out....

there is something called "equilibriumn" (and yes, i know we all know that) haha... so when there's surplus... we try to increase some sort of expenditure... such as government, investment (adjusting interest rates to stimulate business/investors/housing etc), or try to distribute the money back to us through some other methods like better tax rebate, tax cuts, transfer payments, etc. if deficit occurs, the opposite will be done, so a new equilibrium point will be reach... depending on situation, the equilibrium point might result in a higher GDP or lower... the avg income might become higher or lower --> lead to inflation blah blah blah........

the only problem people speak of is the government is accounting too much of their government expenditure in the calculation (such as expenditure on the politians luxury stuff, too much private flights, extremely expensive dinner, and unnecessary spedning)... they account those into the annual calculation.... at least that's what i heard about on their scamming issue... that's why we're not getting too much in return even our gov't suppose to have a surplus... because the surplus is balanced out by increasing the government expenditure for their own pleasure... HAHAHA....... blah... i might be wrong... i dun even know what is real and what is fake when i listen to the radio, news, friends, chat, etc. people can be bias, parties try to twist other parties' words to draw votes.... =)

^^^^^^
That was a pretty good sum up, but I suppose your right they probably could cut GST if they were tighter on what they spend their money on. I've noticed that whenever the Government contracts people for work or buys equipment they get charged through the roof! I remember when one of the companies I worked for sold Hard Drives to the Government they were charging $50/ per drive then I would normally see.

i really like when a bunch of people who are not informed at all think they have answers to complicated confusing questions by listening to a debate between a couple people who you assume are there because they're good liars.

democracy is nothing but the belief that collective ignorance is better than that of the individual's.

If you don't know anything about the parties or the issues, I don't think there is any shame in not voting. It's not like it really means anything anyway.

Some white guys at the top make money for them and their friends while putting up ethnic people in communities to represent them for more votes.

i'm voting Green or NDP. Keep in mind its most likely going to be another minority gov and Bloc and Conservatives will stick together and the conservatives will sellout whatever they have to so Bloc backs them. Meaning Bloc will get things they had no hope in hell of getting with Liberals.

But Liberals and NDP will stick together.

The key is, if the Bloc/conservatives have more seats then liberals/NDP...alot of things will change, but if Liberals/NDP have more seats, they will just overthrow the gov first chance they get...so we are ****ed either way.

That said, i like how NDP and Conservatives want to arm border guards. These border guards are told to search for weapons but have no weapon themselves...no wonder they don't search cars often. But generally I hate Bloc alot and conservatives are too right wing, plus I see Harper getting into bed with Bush fast.
