Fido users

Got a text message out of the blue stating that there's a promo switch from Fido to Rogers with 6 months unlimited and free GSM phone.

Anyone esle get this?? Wanna know if it's legit? I hate Fido's coverage.

One of my friends who works for the Rogers store offered me the same thing. So I think it's legit.

But Steve, if you hate Fido's coverage, you will want to destroy your Roger's GSM phone. A couple of my friends from one of my classes had Roger's GSM and I have Fido. In the class they would get no reception whereas I would have full. At a tim hortons, they would have no reception/1 bar, I would have almost full, same for most places we would go out to..

Roger's TDMA cell phones are great, but their GSM is at the stage Fido was like 2-3 years ago. Find someone that has a Roger's GSM phone and when you're somewhere with them (not outdoors) then compare reception and you'll likely find what I said to be true, unless in a month and a half they have totally upgraded thier service.

Also, have you heard the saying "It's too good to be true"? Maybe that quote applies here, Roger's wouldn't be running around giving 6 months of free UNLIMITED service unless their service is inferior, right?

But check it out, it might have changed. I'm just talking from my experiences. Best of luck, buddy.

Cell

The only major providers offering CDMA are Telus and Bell. Out of these two, Bell is offering the Fido Promo. So Bell would probably be able to help you.

GSM is amazing over seas, but here it's crap. CDMA is the GSM of North America.

Hope this clears it up a bit......

Where did you hear this?

Rumor has it Fido's CEO has a real dislike of good ol' Ted Rogers, and suggested he would never sell.

Maybe the ca$h was too hard to turn down...

Exactly my point. I want a phone AND service that has good reception and can switch between analog and digital in case I'm out of range for digital (i.e. down in St. Thomas). Currently I'm paying $34.73 (incl tax; w/$3 call display; 200mins anytime). This is the best deal I have seen so far and 200mins is more than enough for me. If there's any better deals out there please post up guys/gals. Thanks

I use an old school dual mode 6190....

Believe it switches over to ROGERS analogue system when outta PCS range...

Just want a new handset and don't want to lose the number...

But none of the newer ones have Analogue capability that I can find...

Guess I'm stuck...

If its true that Rogers will buyout Fido, what does that mean about their Pay as you go service?
The reason I went with Fido in the 1st place was because Rogers' service was too expensive!

With the GSM coming to Canada does that mean the PCS is going to die?

GSM for Rogers is horrible!! Phones basically don't work when indoors.

I've heard that Rogers is currently upgrading their GSM capabilities though; no idea how long that'll take however!

Hey guys i'm using the Motorola V60 on Rogers GSM network and I haven't had any problems yet but i'm in ottawa. There is full coverage now from ottawa to toronto cuz like a few months ago it still wasn't existent it would chop up all the time. I have no complaints on the gsm with rogers, right now anyways. There shouldnt be a huge problem if you don't leave the city and go into the country too much. Even then i haven't had too big of a problem.

BTW i'm paying 20$ a month 150 anytime minutes and unlimited evenings and unlimited weekends

What other services are included with that $20 plan (call waiting, call display, etc)?

Hehehe you won't be able to get that plan unless you can get a hookup with someone that can get stuff done at rogers I think this silimiar style to mine is like 45$ or something right now at the stores lol

But just to rub it in a bit, i have call waiting, call display, voice mail, call conferencing, call forwarding
