People think price of gas is high, but they are willing to pay 3 dollars for a cup of coffee.

Life is beautiful.

well, I think it makes sense to some degree.

Whether its true or not, there is the percieved image that you are getting something better when you buy a $3 cup of coffee versus the $1.30 or whatever Tim Hortons charges.

With gas your buying the EXACT same product....

gas is a necessity. . .we have to buy it regularly by the litre, so it adds up
we dont need coffee, so we dont have to buy a cup for $3. . . if the price of coffee increased 100% per cup, a lot less ppl would buy it
but if the price of gas increased 100% per litre everyone would still buy it

Gas is not a Necessity.

I have discovered this for myself just recently, when I started to ride my bike to work. sure I still take the car when it's raining out (or calling for rain like today) but I've found I can get many places on my bike without much effort. and I actually enjoy riding a bike to work as compared to a car. down side? takes me 15 minutes longer... but thats a 45 minute ride of slow movement through the back streets of scarborough enjoying the beauty of the world around me...

if you don't like the gas prices get a bike .. it's healthier for you.

as for supply and demand... there is pointthat once the price of oil/gas hits that point people won't be able to afford it or will go into debt just to get gas to get to work to make not enough money to pay for the gas (and food and clothing and shelter and the bare essentials that come with that) eventually once the credit limits have been hit you will have people defaulting on loans and mortgages and the economy start to collapse. this will cause people to lose jobs and without jobs and a high credit limits being tapped out people will be looking atthe dawn of the great depression redux.

The Peak of fossil fuels is within the next few years. it will not take the running out of oil to cause the collapse of the economy, as supplies start to dwindle the price of oil will rise, this is a given a basic of supply and demand. Once it rises to a high enough price the demand deconstruction economic collapse that I discribed starts to happen.

After I get married, I should be residing in Richmond Hill, so going to work could be done via a bike. I am looking forward to it to be honest.

It is a 30km one way trip for me now, so I am not going to do it.

as an avid cyclist I would love to agree with you. However the idea of biking with a laptop on my back is not very appealing (water, falling, snow, cold,ect).....
