its gonna be open-ish bar if I have anything to do with it...I think a couple kegs will suffice this wedding...one for steve and I and the other for everybody else...thats a pretty decent wedding gift I think...thats an easy 400bucks and people will have beer!

Just out of curiosity, when people decide on having a cash bar at a wedding (i am asking because i have never been to one that was cash... open bar is the way to go imho.. you want guests to enjoy themselves, not wory about money and change and tipping), do you automatically expect the amount received as a gift to be lower? or do you expect the same as if it were an open bar?

What we've learned from experience is to leave the envelope containing the cash wedding present unsealed...that way, if it's a pay bar, unfortunately the bride and groom will have to receive a smaller gift because we had to actually pay for our own drinks. No offence meant, but IMhumbleO, if u're throwing the party, the least u can do is treat your guests to food and drink. But to each his (or her) own, and sometimes (...ready for the sugary sweet comment?...) just being invited is the best gift of all...right? LOL

I agree 100%.
In my husband and my situation, we went and got married in Cuba, so when we got back we had a reception for family and friends, we had an open bar, only because, especially in our situation, it would of been improper to ask them to pay, since they didnt even get to see the wedding, it was nice that people brought gifts because that wasn't expected either, since again they were not there to witness the wedding.
In the end it works out to about the same if you have an open bar or a cash bar. My parents paid for all the alcohol so that was a plus. But having a open bar costs money that you would of had to pay out of your "profit" at the end anyways. Atleast once you get your money and gifts you know its yours to keep and you dont have to pay for the bar out of it, cause that will take up a big chunk.
I've only ever been to open bar as well, but I could imagine with a cash bar that you dont have the same amount of wildness from the people. This way its sorta controlled, maybe that is what Kathryn wants.
Although if Matthew brings some kegs, that thought about a controlled wedding goes right out the window
Congrats again hun,
Connie

my wedding next year is going to be open bar......sit-down meal, white glove service, open bar, all for $XX per plate (note double digits, not triple).......
Wedding is only something that is once in a life-time, but sometimes more than once, but hopefully just once
