Getting in Windows XP *messed up*

Long story short/

brother installed xp pro that a friend had
now he cant get into windows because it keeps asking for product activation and wont let him in untill the ID number is input.

Hes going to buy the real deal next week, but before that he just needs to get in to back up his work before he does a clean install.

Anyways around this? So far it wont let him in, not even through safe mode.

He already has the product key entered but now its asking for a Product ID verification number (all numbers, no letters) at first I thought it was a CD Key but as soon as I typed in a character it said it has to be all numbers.

I searched the web with no luck. Worse comes to worse well just format the box and start fresh anyways if he doens't have much on it.

Weird, all I know is that you can only use one active key on each machine. So if your friend is using that same key, then it wont let you in with the same combination. That's what I thought it was, never heard of a numerical access key on top of that

thanks aaron.

I was thinking of doing that, but all other machines here are 2k and use FAT32 while the XP seems NTFS.

So theres no way around it? I found a back door way in, Logged in through safe mode command prompt, shut down the DOS screen and CTRL - ALT - DEL then TASK MANAGER and Ran C: and then the desktop appeared and everything was back to normal except it was still in safe mode, well at least he can back up data on the burner now

Both W2K and XP support NTFS, Fat16, Fat32.
So no worry about compatibility...

good to know for future reference Mugen.

Cause I was a little scared when I booted up off a DOS diskette and couldn't access the C drive.

It's better be that way... Otherwise NTFS does not serve the purpose of "better Security" (although it is relatively easy to crack)...

what OS you running? if its XP or 2000 you have the option to boot up off the CD and choose repair that sometimes fixes any problems
