too bad, some of the new GM cars weren't terrible, the Solstice looks alright (not as good as a miata, but a little cheaper)...and the upcoming Saturn Sky looks great......

so true, applies to Beer as well, $35 for a product containing mostly water...its labour costs paying people $25+/hr that is killing the costs.
making beer or factory work is not skilled labour, so why is it getting skilled labour prices?

The cost of health insurance and pensions is what is killing the big 3. A huge part of the revenue from each car sold goes to paying these costs. IMO, karma's a bitch. Those people (through the CAW and UAW) held the companies hostage over the years, and now it's payback time. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

I read that article. That friggin sux.
I agree though, the union is ****ing everyone. My gf works at gm during the summers and she gives me the low down on everything. They wathed this video from the CEO and one of the questions he asked was "Can Gm go bankrupt?". They're in a rut. They're getting ****ed by the CAW/UAW.
Everytime the union contract expires, they choose a car company to pic the new package and they make it up. This past septemeber it was FORD who made the package. Well, whats good for Ford isn't neccessarily good for GM. Gm has more people retired, more workers, a larger company. How can they only take this model from one car company which is totaly different from GM and Chrysler??
Gm's new line up is pretty decent. And yes, chryslers is great, but GM doesn't have one of the best European car companies pumping money into them (mercedes).
Also, since we're talking about reliablity and all, I used to own a sunfire, and I had some problems, not many though, didn't really spend alot of money getting it fixed (i like my civic better though). Having said that, my friend has a 1994 civic LX and has had to put about 1800 worth of work into the engine. It works both ways, no car is perfect. They're simply the worst investment ever.

I think that GM is in trouble, and I agree that if they don't stop building frumpy rattle making gas guzzlers, they are going down!!

I think the mentality is GM is such a large company they can never go bankrupt, even though if enough share holders dropped their stocks they can be out of business in 10 mins flat. Everyone remember Eatons?
I think they should cut down their sister brands and focus more on making a stronger line up of cars, not the same crap as last time just with heated seats. Also getting rid of that stupid bowtie emblem for chevy wont hurt. Everytime i see that glued onto a car it screams "cheap!" at me.

if they did ever go bankrupt, they are huge so in Canada anyways, they would get bankruptcy protection to get a plan to restructure....like air canada, steelco, and others.
us it'd be chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
not like they'd just close the doors and call it a career...say, meh...we've had a good run. ya right

I just watched a news report about this story. GM is in big trouble and apparently for every 1 employee that GM lays off it affects 7 others. I live in Oshawa and this is really going t okill this town.
They do pay out too much in Benefits and pension, there is also way too much dog ****ing by employees. I have quite a few friends that work for GM or one of its suppliers and you wouldn't beleive some of the stories. Fake injuries beer breaks, sleeping etc..
But this is really going to hurt my area really bad and affect Canadas' economy as a whole.

it's bad for our economy, and most of oshawa will be unemployed. but u know, the CAW and their generous wages f'd the company over.
so i'll stick to my quality honda/or most imports by that, and toast to GM and Ford's demise.

Thats too bad...unions just abuse companies now.
I feel bad for the city of Oshawa, but maybe this will make people think twice about being a bunch of leaches.
Ship the operation to china..no pensions, no unions.

thats the other problem, move the company to Mexico, ok no unions, lower wages...but its funny how GM would not lower the cost of the cars = more profit for them due to the less wages and they would have complete control, 5 min late...your fired. you don't praise GM, your fired.
where as here its all union, so its one extreme here...to one extreme there. there is no medium.
you should have heard it on the news tonight, they stated with "how would you feel being laid off right before christmas, we'll talk to people tonight at 11"
they are being laid off in 2 years! ****in news twisting everything. I do feel bad for the employee's though and the City, but again, skilled labour gets less wages and this is a factory job, GM went about it right and is giving 2 years notice...its sad but thats life, I was fired for a bull**** false reason from a Job I had, CAW union was our union...what a bunch of lazy slobs, thats part of the problem, CAW is trash, atleast thats my opinion of them based on first hand experience.
