I always find it funny that almost all English speaking Canadian use Cantonese to greet Chinese New Years, when Mandarin is the official language for Chinese.

I gave my two young cousins red envelops. I might get some during my father's work place dinner event.

actually from my experience its the other way around...maybe not for chinese new year but MOST of the time anyone not chinese that is trying to say a phrase to me, they get taught mandarin and it sounds horrible. maybe its cuz of the large amount of chinamen that are in the country of recent years...
i associate cantonese with ppl from hong kong and mandarin with mainlander china fobs and taiwanese..even though mandarin is huge in hong kong now.
anyhow, it doesnt matter to me what the official language is, cantonese is still prefered for me cuz i dont understand a lick of mandarin.
