the last thing you want to do is wipe the drive clean.

If it gets real bad just make a new partion, reinstall XP and in the new partiotion with XP backup all files off the old XP install and run the virus scanner from the new partition. That way the virus wont be loading with XP so you have a better chance of removing it and keeping all your data.

Try SOLUTION:
Downloaded EWIDO ( http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ ) - full version free for 14 days - minimal version free after that. It took 2 hours to scan the whole computer (300 Mb of data) but FOUND 111 MALWARE files that all those other programs missed!

I use Linux now .. no issues with spyware or adware at all... and as simple to use as windows .. (at least the distro I'm using)

as for cleaning up your system try Loudsubz advice...

for preventative measures don't download games or visit **** sites .. hell even avoid online game sites (you know where you can play pool or chess or whatever) ....

Connie, you seem to be relatively well-versed when it comes to where you get malware from.

However, there are other things you should look at it before you go blaming a legitimate site for the infection. It's actually the least likely place you got it from.

a) Are you connected directly to your cable / dsl modem or are you routing through a router / firewall device?
b) Are you running the latest service pack (SP2) and do you patch your system regularly (i.e. do you have auto-update enabled to run every day at 3am)
c) Do you use any P2P software like Limewire? Some networks are rife with trojans and malware. You may think you're opening the latest "Daniel Powter"** song but in fact you could be launching a trojan.

i always have at least two logical drives.

c:\ operating system and programs only

x:\ data (mp3, avi, jpg, doc, xls, nrg, iso, etc)

if i get pissed at windows i will reformat (not very often with XP)

you can always start fresh and keep your old ish no problem.

i even have "my documents" moved to my x:\

1) I am directly connected to my computer, no router or anything.
2) I am running the latest version of XP, and I constantly run checks for updates and such. Its pretty much a brand new computer, so I treat it like my baby lol.
3) I do use limewire but we haven't used it in nearly 3 weeks, and this virus came through yesterday. Unless it was there from 3 weeks ago. The only thing I've downloaded to my computer in the last 2 weeks has been games from that site. I followed the where they said there were stored and it was under each name of each game that I played, so I can only assume that it was from. And I do realize when things are transmitting from the net to home computers, things can be picked up along the way.

I think the problem is gone, from the System Restore, computer seems to be running good again. did a few checks with different virus checkers and nothing is coming up.

Good to hear everything is ok.. Just to double check look inside the quarintine section of AVG and delte any files that are in there. Next time you get a virus and your antivirus software can't remove it, always look on google for more information, there is always a way to remove viruses manually.

ok connie, i hate to say this, but this guy is a bitch to remove.

I had it a while back. you have to download like 4 different cleansing programs and need a bit of techie knowledge to pull it off.
