Make sure the HD is plugged in to your computer (Power and IDE cables). It's probably best, just for now to put it on your Primary IDE. Make sure your Power source is a) supplying enough power b) supplying power to the power cables going into the HD.
Then turn her on and run your bios settings. Run your BIOS' HD auto detect feature (if it has one), sometimes the computer forgets or loses the hard drive (once in a blue moon).
You could also try getting one of those boot disks that come with new HDs, that might help your PC figure out that a "new" HD is being setup. It'll clean some of it up maybe.
It's hard to diagnose problems when you're not close to the computer you're trying to fix.
Do you hear your HD starting up? It's a light humming noise you can usually hear if you put your ear close to the case.
When did the problem start? Did you try something new before it broke/messed up? More details!

Alright about a month ago my harddrive all of a sudden started to act all funny.. it would run for about 5 seconds then stop..etc etc over and over agian.. so i left the computer off and looked at it yesterday.. now when i start up the pc after the compaq screen i get a message saying
Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
i have no idea what to do.. maybe a format would fix the problem but how would i go about it? is the drive dead? please help thanks!

NTLDR.............hmmm...........make sure you enable the boot up floppy disk search, and that A: is in the boot sequence
that should allow you to use a startupdisk to format your computer
i had something similar happen to me yesterday on an old PC

You primary drive has had a head crash..
It is junk now..
remove the old drive..
Is it set to master or CS???
set the new drive to master or CS and reinstall...
I believe the bios for the compaq is F10 when you see the cursor in the corner...
hope that helps...
