When I'm learning from the text book I read it once and highlight all the important points. Then I write the important points out on a piece of paper and read it over 3 times. Worked for me all throughout university.

As already mentioned, read the text first and absorb it and understand what it's about. Then go through it again quickly (skimming) picking out what you felt was relevant.

I remember writing exams many moons ago when I was in university, I couldn't do the "study for a whole month before the exam" routine, I would have to study everything 24 hours before the exam, literally. I would not sleep, pop caffeine pills like crazy, go write the exam and when I was done the exam I would come home and take a 20 hour power nap. I miss those days...haha.
