How old for Emissions Exempt?

How old does your car have to be before it's emissions exempt? I thought it was if your car was 15 years or older. Mine's an '89 so wouldn't I be able to no have to do it this year? Gotta pass an e-test by mid Jan.

15 years from date of manufacture I believe, so unless your car was made it January of 89, I think your out of luck this year, least thats what I read somewhere bout the skylines.

I believe it was 25 years old (by law a classic then) or before a certain date (to cover cars manufactured without emissions devices)

it's 20....all cars from '83 down in 2003 and all cars from '84 and down for 2004.....

it also alternates from even and odd years. this year was even so everything from 1984 to 2000 needed doing......

next year everything from 2001 to 1985 will have to be done!

also if you are buying, then the car has to be withing 1 year of test, but if you are renewing then it is good for two.

So wait, then how does that skyline thing work? You dont have to pass safety, but you do have to pass emissions? Weird, guess it wouldnt be too hard to do.

safety only has to be done when transferring ownership.....emissions is a measure of the hydrocarbons etc, coming out of your engine.....they can be hard to pass sometimes depending on the car....RX-7's were notorious for always failing emissions......
