How private is your cellular phone?

How private is your cellular phone?
I have always wondered... how is your privacy on a mobile phone. Are the conversations recorded? Can authorities hear the "recordings"?
If home lines can be tapped, then cellular phones can be tapped too right? Just tuning in to the right frequency.
I think i'm watching too many crime shows.

criminal code part 6 states cell phone is not considered private communications...there for its fair game. cell phones are the least secure way of communication there is.
home phone is private communication because its at home, so resonable expectation of privacy is there...cell phone, there is not. home required warrant, cell phone, nothing at all, a private investigator can record your cell phone conversation if he wants, so ya....beware what your saying if you think your in a person who others would be interested in whats being said.

commication in a democrary is never secure....
the government always wants to know what your up too..
I work for bell and with the right allowance I can drop into calls... it's a relatively easy thing for me to do(30 seconds tops)... however I have to be justified in order to carry it out.
THe funny part is not only can I listen but I can say stuff to. of course this si strictly not allowed by the company and I don't do it howver the ability in the equipment exists....
for teh record the only reason I can listen in is as follows...
1) for call quality assurance, if I bring up a new circuit I have to ensure it's working properly I'm only allowed to sit in on a call for 30 seconds.. (trust me you don't get any information in this time)
2) with a warrant served by the police, yes it's not required .. but it's also not required that bell open up to every tom dick and harry that wants to listen in. you need a warrant before we will tap a line.

unless both sides have the DES encryption it won't work..
if one side has it and they call a line without then it has to be decrypted along the line somewhere .. most likely at a phone company office... and once it's decrypted so that the far end can talk to you well the telco just has to listen in to the decrypted part...
of course the beauty of an IP phone is it's harder to be traced where you are calling from and if you work things right you can route the call through multiple servers before connecting to the telco... thereby protecting location of you can't protect conversation...
