HP... you suck
HP laptop died yesterday. Totally out of the blue, the hard drive failed. I really only used it to surf the net, but I had a ton of photos and most of my music library on it.
For all the crap that HP and Microsoft is always trying to get you to download and/or update, you would think they would come up with something to warn you of a potential failure. My laptop is now a paperweight. No warning. No replacement, No repairs. Nothing. Everything on the hard drive is just POOF! Gone.
I would be like the motor in my car suddenly taking a dive for no reason and Honda telling me TFB, you need a new car, take the bus in the mean time sucker.
The Sony VAIO of my wife's that I'm using now works great, but it's pink and isn't doing much for my masculinity. So, whats a decent laptop thats not made by HP and wont cost me more then $1000?

If you really only use it for surfing the web then try the one I have. Look for an Acer Asipire. Try one of the newer models as they have more features and what not. Ive had my Acer Aspire 7720Z and I've never had a problem really.

Maybe its just your good luck. I've felt with several hp desktops and laptops, and all of em were nothing but a big headache. And I hate apple too. Lol we had a thread about apple being gay not too long ago. No offence but there are many better manufacturers than hp

Have you tried putting the hard drive in an external drive reader (2.5" or 3.5" with an adapter) to get your data off?
A lot of the time you can still see the data on the drive as a slave (might have to chkdsk /R or run getdataback for NTFS but it's possible).

There are many different laptops that are decent starting around $400 and up. All depends on what you want to do with it.
For storing data (I'd go with saving important items on an external HD and backed up to cd or dvd.) backups are important. You can buy micro vaults that automagically backup your directories at specific intervals, or a t a touch of a button.
Toshiba , Asus are good quality, Acer is more of a middle of the road type brand, good , but a quality you can feel the difference with.
Stay away from emachines and the like.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I took it back to FS where I bought it an dthey were going to do a diagnostic. They called me yesterday and just said the HD has failed. The extended warranty I bought from FS just expired too. The laptop is a few year's old now anyway. I've had a few offer's from people to try to recover the data or get me a new HD.
Not bashing HP really, it just ticks me off when things just stop working for no apparent reason. I've already had the keyboard and the power cord replaced under warranty. My HP desktop is 6 year's old and still going strong. I barely use it, just for my banking and printing stuff out and my wife has her music stored on it.
The guy at FS was recommending an LG or an Acer for a budget laptop. I'll probably wait till the end of the summer and buy a new one when the back to school sales are on.
I think what I'm missing most is all of my favourites. I had about 100 of them. Car sites, home stuff, electronics, **** sites, etc. LOL.

I hate PC's. It doesn't seem to matter what make they are, they always seem to be unpredictable. My wife has an acer and it sucks ***, she has had it for 1.5 years and has had to re-install crappy vista 3 times on it. I finally gave up and went and bought a MAC. This thing is awesome, is fast as hell, zero problems, and much more user friendly than a pc. If you look on kijiji you should be able to find one for less than a grand. Just my .02.

you should ignore everything technology related out of a person's mouth if they recommend acer for anything.
normal HDDs should be expected to last 3-5 years.
laptops run hotter than normal PCs.
You should always backup all your photos.
it is ridiculous to have so much faith in a mass produced electronics board with a magnetic disc.
put your faith in having two of them at all times.
i recommend having them on DVD and an external drive.
don't buy lesser quality tech equipment to save $200.
buy asus.
