I am one Brave ****...

So anyways, my gf has been breaking my ***** for me to teach her how to drive a standard car, and tonight I gave her lesson # 1 at the GO Station parking lot, and I must say I was very impressed...

She handled accelerating from a dead stop with ease and found shifting from 1st to 2nd pretty easy...

She pulled the chicken a few times but didnt grind at all, so my clutch didnt suffer that much...The only problem she had was taking in all the points you have to remember when driving stick...

Overall not too bad for the first time behind the wheel of a manual transmission car...

Anyone else had this experience??

yeah I tried to teach someone to drive stick ... the one thing I found that helped was I told them .. don't think about it just do it.... she was then driving without me worrying about the clutch

yeah my gf's mind was all on the clutch but i told her not to think about it...and it seemed to help...

Then my gf said that driving stick is such a hassle cause there is so much to remember and to do...I told her that i felt the same way when i bought my car but after consistently driving it most manual drivers would never go back to an auto...it just becomes second nature and that its much more entertaining to control the car rather than have the ecu control you in an auto...

I taught an x-gf how to drive standard... I was more worried about her crashing into something than ruining the clutch or grinding gears.

It's frustrating really.

I taught (well tried to teach) my wife standard. She didn't start off very well but dramatically improved, then went and bought an automatic car.

But it is safer for all involved. She is crazy now I couldn't imagine if she could properly gear down to accelerate.

I'm tempted to try and teach my gf to drive standard but I don't want to hear my almost brand new clutch grinding. It'll bring tears to my eyes

Funny... I took my girlfriend out for her first lesson 2 weeks ago (must be the season to do this). She also did well accelerating from a dead stop and the 1-2 shifts were good.

She did stall the car at the end when we called it quits for the night but that was the only time... and she didn't ride the clutch at any point.

I think that the only thing that will take time is teaching her how to downshift. Everything about driving standard is so natural to me after all these years that I really have to sit back and analyze what I'm doing to explain it to her. For example, I was trying to tell her about downshifting and she asked about what engine speed was right when on the throttle to downshift and I couldn't give her an answer because I just know by the feel/sound of the car at the time I do it.

whoa! I remember teaching my ex g/f last year, hope I can say that she did good but I cant, it felt like teaching a brick... she must of staled 10 times, and she went over the curb good thing the car wasent lowerd then or it would of been a desaster, but after 2 weeks or so it got more easy for her she had a few mistakes, but we worked on it, and now she drives her own stick car! she even got a short shifter! bawhahahah!!!

I taught my sister to drive manual last year in an empty school parking lot. Didn't stall too much, but chirped the tires quite a few times. But now that she knows how to drive stick shift, I don't see my car as often as I used to. :cry

I tried teaching an ex-gf to do it years ago and I can't remember how well she did, but I guess that she did pretty well coz I don't remember crying or anything over a dying clutch or something.

You just gotta be in the right mood to do it otherwise you'll get mad and then you get impatient and then everyone will be sad and someone will cry... lol

I one time taught my gf how to drive my car. She pulled the seat the the closest position and she said:

"My legs are too short, I can't reach the clutch."

It was a 5 minute lesson. Then last week, she told me:

"OH I think I was bending my legs... teach me teach me!"

yeah i had a 89 Pontiac Sunbird GT TURBO
and i taught my friend kris's girlfriend at the time how to drive 5spd
so we id show her how to drive a various parking lots late at night
she was doing pretty damn good i was really surprised
then one night we went to the Durham College Parking lot and i said you know what you are doing so good ill get out and let you drive around for alittle bit
BIG MISTAKE
she drove around for about 5mins and then went RIGHT IN TO A DITCH and when she came out of it she hit one of those parking space concret things and it went up and over the the hood and roof of the car
CAR WAS FUCKED UP BEYOND REPAIR

i learned my lesson and haven't let any girls/women drive my car other then my mom (she used to have a 76 TA)

I taught a couple friends on my old shi box car. I tried teaching the g/f on my car but she killed it too many times and would never listen to me so OUT!
