incompetent English skills

One aspect of school that always used to bother me was that people from other countries would have horribly written essays but would get off easy while I would be scrutinized. Granted, I believe I got a better education for it but at the same time, especially in university, it bothered me that someone could pass a stupid humanities or sociology course writing papers that were written horribly, but acceptable because the student's first language was not english.

If you are at a university where the primary language is english, and the assignments are to be conducted in english, I don't see how one can obtain a degree without a proper grasp of the language.

anyway, the person who takes care of printers is away at work, and naturally, I'm the one for people to come to.

Check out this request from a person who actually emails clients. I must say, this is one of the better from her. Oh, she's a cake. Born and raised in Canada.

For subject, she put her name.

---------

hey there is some wrong with your printer. I think the ink is out, It is not printing that good and you look at it for us,

--------

I'm hoping she dropped out of highschool.. otherwise, it's a pretty low standard ontario has..

haha, I would hope they are a drop out.....but probably not unfortunatly......

I agree with you about the university and poor english skills shouldn't be acceptable, but I think that is changing, I had classes where I knew people who could do the work, and understood it, but failed any of the written parts of it because they sucked at english.

Bruce I agree with your assessment of the educational system in Ontario.

THe Key issue is Teachers are afriad to fail students that require the extra work. and for the most part the government doesn't want them too because if students are held back they are costing more money to educate

I have seen examples like this in University. People with language deficiencies still able to complete school. Some people might be poor in conversation but can read and write quite ok. Some do the opposite.

I dont think you should be granted access to go to a university when you cannot speak the first language. How the hell do you expect to learn. I had this problem in calculus, each week we would do a project in a group of 3. The one guy was from Korea and couldn't explain ANYTHING. We would just put his name on the paper even though he 'tried' to help, he couldn't.

Don't worry bruce we have a lot of those at my work too. My most used saying is "sorry, I don't understand you" and walk away.

I beg to differ, teachers are NOT afraid to fail students. My wife is a teacher and she constantly fails at least 5-10% of her High School class.

I agree, the government doesn't want teachers to fail students b/c it costs a lot of money, but who cares ... I think teachers should know better and fail students who don't deserve to pass. After all we will always need people to clean toilets and pick up the trash.

Being an immigrant myself, learning another language can be diffcult at first. But every effort should be put into it so one can blend in with the society, not just hang around China Town all day long and claim to be Canadian and owns a frigging passport. Of course, learning English at the age of 10 is different from learning it at 25, or even 35. I don't blame old immigrants for not speaking proper English. But for those who have been in the country since 10 and still speak or write with major grammer mistakes after 10 or even 20 years, I honestly don't know what to say.

I know a few people who I go to University with that couldn't speak or write english very well and they failed. I know someone who didnt know jack **** and just cut and pasted and they got an F. They didnt know how to write in english and they failed. I dont know what university u went to but I've seen it happen. No offence of course.

Me personally...I attacked the problem at an early age. Taking a reading and writing english course for the whole summer before going into grade 3.

i majored in economics at york and probably 60% of my class was oriental. half of those could not speak 20 works of english.

it still amazes me to this day how they got any theory assignments completed.

i think they pay people to do thier non-math work.

grammar.. grammer... big deal.. fxck nit picking.

listening to "i needing to get the databases on my computer." for 2 hours is bad. at a company i used to work with we had one guy who barely understood. he would say 'no probrem' just like on TV and he had no idea what you were talking about. He'd fsck up a windows install for a user.

However, we had a number of employees who were more comfortable speaking to him in their language as their english skills weren't up to par to communicate effectively, so we stuck him over there and it turned out well.

Just because someone's english skills aren't good does not in any way mean they are stupid and should be ignored.

I just think it's really stupid that people who can't use english are graduating from english based universities. "he just moved here and he's learning:... is not helping the poor bastard... he's never gonna move up cause he's not gonna be able to talk to anyone to show he has more potentiol.

you need to learn to write better as well.

we all have our problems and we should learn to deal with them.

Well thats not an immigration test thats a citizenship test there is a huge difference.

For an immigrate to come here they basically have to prove the desire to work or erefugee status I know it's a bit more complex then that but tahts the basics.

For a Person to become a citizen of the country they have to either be born here or take the citizenship test.
