The Chinese usually use the dynasty to call their year, Taiwan is Ming Guo 97 year (11 years behind western calendar i.e. 2008 - 11 = 97 <drop the first two digit, use the last two only>), that's when the government was formed. China, under the rule of Communist Party, follows the western calendar.

Matt, technically, a year has to be 365.25 days.
we can start a new calendar however.
we'll have 3 seasons. beer, hard liquor, and steak.
i think we should start off with the year 0 and do it all in hexadecimal instead of base 10.
new year will be on halloween.
and all major sporting events have the day after declared a holiday.
