Toshiba and HP are usally under a $1000 ... unless you want to go the Dell route. If it's just surfing, and entertainment, with a little work thrown in, it's all good. If you are worried about them breaking down, then get extended warranty, although they'll probably make the excuse that physical damage does not count.

ACER ....
I love mine I use for work. Its in the field (literally used outside, in basements, on the ground, on top of machinery and cardboard boxes etc). It has been knocked over by people and dropped on the floor. The lid is a bit scratched, but everything works perfect. It never sees a traditional office desk setup for very long so I put it through its paces for sure.
I could have gotten lucky and got a good unit, but I have 0 complaints. I am running X Pro on it and it boots up in 30 seconds or so.

If you were going to get a Macbook (or Pro) and you can wait a few months that would be better, rumours are a very different new one will be coming out in teh Sept/Oct time frame...
Although if your a student (not sure if you are) and you buy one now, you get a free ipod touch (and the student discount on the laptop)

HP's under $1000 aren't that good.
The two HP business laptops I have are absolutely rock solid, but they are strictly for the corporate traveller. They don't have the best graphics cards, sound cards, etc. that the general consumer market would demand.
I also have two lenovo thinkpads, which are built very well, they're also very reliable and I've never had a problem with either.
Bad experiences for me include Toshiba, Acer, and Sony Vaio.
