LCD Monitors

I'm thinking about buying a 19" LCD monitor. My 15" Hitachi just isn't cutting it anymore after 8 years.. I'm just wondering what to look for since I don't know much about LCD's.. I've seen contrast ratio, some are 550:1, 600:1, etc.. does this measurement replace the dot pitch of a CRT monitor? What's better, higher or lower contrast ratio (I assume higher?), and what else should I look for in them besides price and manufacturer?

although theres more knowledge that what i'm about to say i'll be brief.

contrast ratio=higher the better
response time=lower the better
some lcd's have DVI inputs which if you have a DVI connection on your computer, excellent.

i would recommend, benQ or samsung.

not sure where you live, but if it's around brampton stop by where I work and take a look at what we have. 10% off on Sunday if you find something you like.

response time should be 16ms or less, 12 is better and the lowest you will find i think.

viewing angle is important too.

i recommend never considering the following brands for anything that you don't consider disposable.

BenQ, Lite-On, LG.

they're all garbage.

I almost always buy Viewsonic or NEC. Your monitor is your direct link to the interface, you should cheap out on $100 for something so important. I have 17", 19", and 21" viewsonic's at work. even the 17 is pretty big...

17"CRT is actually 16"... while 17" LCD is 17"

just my thoughts.

i dunno.. dell computers use the cheapest components... compared to ibm and compaq.

compaq used to change specs around all the time

i found ibm sales to be really stupid. i argued with the guy because instead of giving me 80gb drives.. he was telling me to get 20gb and fix my 'storage problem' i told him if he said i have a storage problem one more time, i was never ordering anything from him again.

he shut the hell up, but i still went with building my own specs... cheaper and better..

----

monitors... viewsonic uses NEC electronics...

ViewSonic VA902b 19" LCD (Black) 8ms 550:1 270cd/m2 1280x1024 $374.00

ViewSonic Xtreme VX924 19" LCD 4 ms 1280 x 1024 DVI, VGA (HD-15) $505

Thanks for the offer, where do you work? I live in mississauga so I could make the trip depending what models you have and prices too.. I'm looking for the samsung 930B or Viewsonic VX924 or something comparable to those..

canada computers at kennedy and steeles... tigerdirect should have some decent deals as well.

we have samsung crt monitors in the office... the company used to buy those.. too much glare... i'm not a fan of samsung without any valid complaints.. you'll much a lot of 'advice' you get about electronics will be biased...

viewsonic is what i always go with cause i've had the best experiences with them..

i base my opinions on which products get returned more frequently.
and which one's i see everyday at work.

viewsonic is number 1 as far as quality and reliability goes.
benQ as well they have some friggen awesome displays. not sure why Bruce you are opposed to them, they make excellent LCD's.
samsung's are good too.

IMO, anything that is over 19" is way too big, I love 17"
