When you sign your credit card application you allow them to update your info, them and their agents.
It is you who has to do the due diligence to fight the credit bureau for releasing your information. I recommend ordering your credit report on a regular basis to see what is reported, and who has accessed it. Advise them of anything that is not authorized. You can also flag your account and no one can look at your information without your written permission.
As for legal action, let them go to court, just be prepared to state your own case. I think collection agencies hire the scum of the earth and have unethical practices. I have had many refuse to call me when I worked in insolvency. Even when I had to call them, they refused to speak with me.

they dont usually take you to court for such a small debt, it will cost them more to take you to court then what they can actually get from you, they just keep bothering you. for larger debts, say like 20k, they would take you to court for sure. did they actually send you a notice to appear, or did they say that if you dont pay they will take you to court.

It's going to cost you more for a lawyer... Most lawyers will not take a case involving a debt for $1000
Why dont you call the school and see if you can reason with them?
I did that with Hydro, they kept my account running after I asked them to close it. I moved, never got the invoices, long story short the creditors caught up with me, threatned me to pay in 24 hours or else they were going to start garnishe my wages... I called Hydro talked to them, paid them the right amount owing not the over inflated amount the creditors were charging and when she called back two days later to yell at me some more, I told her to **** right off!

Also, if you don't think they will garnishe your wages, think again... I see it alot where I work... I would think it would be embarrassing to start a job somewhere (I know you dont work) and automatically have them take it off of your pay, or it'll come off of your income tax return, you'll never be able to have good credit and buy a house, lease/finance a car....all for what??? $1000!
