You need a new TV
Serious, I got a DVD player, and I hooked it through a VCR into the TV (cuz the TV didn't have the correct hookups), and I couldn't play original DVDs - only copied ones So I went and bought a Toshiba 50HDX82

Player was a Sylvania, one that I got from Audiophilia, the tv was a SMALL Sony 13" and the VCR was a Panasonic. The only thing was that we had to turn it to channel 3 for the VCR and then switch the channel on the VCR to AUX to watch dvd movies.

That's weird cuz I did the same thing with my gf's dvd player and it worked fine, no problems with playing any sort of dvd disk.

I guess that it depends on the VCR when you try to hook up a DVD player through it.
I've had no problems when doing it through this method, but the thing that I notice is that the picture quality is degraded.
Does your g/f have a VCR? Try to hook the DVD player through that!

You need an RF convertor.
Even if you run it into another device with compostite in Macrovision will **** you off with rainbow colours..

It depends on the player if your gonna get washy (macrovision) picture, has absolutely nothing to do with the vcr.
Most US DVD Players have it enabled, most Pacific mall types do not.
Another option is a extenal base convertor which connects inbetween your dvd and any composite device.
It will "strip" the macrovision from the outgoing video signal.
And then you can plug into anything without degraded picture.
This is a copy protection..
