Focus under scrutiny in 5th, 6th federal probes
By David Kiley, USA TODAY
DETROIT — Federal safety officials have opened their fifth and sixth investigations this year into the Ford Focus small car, this time because of complaints that the engine can stall and that the front suspension can collapse.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also has upgraded an investigation of nearly half a million General Motors cars and minivans.
NHTSA opened the latest Focus investigations after getting 72 complaints that the car stalled while being driven, causing seven crashes, and seven complaints that the front suspension control arm fractured during driving, leading to six crashes.
The investigation into engine stall involves 574,700 cars from the 2000 and 2001 model years, the first two years of production. The suspension investigation includes the 2002 model year.
The previously announced investigations involve air bag malfunctions, rear wheel bearings and engine fires.
Ford Motor has recalled Focus nine times since it was launched in late 1999. It is, nevertheless, the fifth best-selling car in the USA.
Despite the problems with Focus, "our quality is improving. ... We have made that a priority," says Ford spokesman Todd Nissen.
In last week's J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey, based on reports of complaints during the first 90 days of ownership, Ford Motor climbed out of last place among seven global automakers to fifth.
In the same survey, Focus had a reported 136 problems per 100 cars, just below the industry average of 134 problems per 100.
Meanwhile, NHTSA has upgraded an investigation of 450,000 GM vehicles to an engineering analysis, one step below a recall order, because of complaints about the steering system.
The investigation covers 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Malibu and Oldsmobile Cutlass cars, 1997 Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Trans Sport and Oldsmobile Silhouette minivans and 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue sedans.
NHTSA has 200 complaints that steering tightened or locked without warning, resulting in 14 crashes. GM has 1,200 complaints, including 14 crashes and 8 injuries.

I can't beleive people are still buying these things after the amount of recalls they have had. I read an article in the wheels section of the Star a few months back that Focus owners said they were not pleased with the reliability of their cars, but yet would buy another one for their next car.
