no one wins the big amount unless you are like 80+

because every time i hear something about it, its always some super aged person that wins

no it's 6 plus bonus for 40% of the winnings... they split the pot when it's over 30 mill...

heard it on the news this morning... regardless of what happens over 30 mill = 40% of the pot...

the most you can ever win is 80% cuz the rest is split by other payouts blah blah blah...

to win 649 you need 6 of 6 numbers... thats it ... now in this case 2 people had the same number so they split the prize....

remember the 38 million was an estimate and the real prize amount is determined after they know how many ticket they have sold.

chance of getting 649 winning numbers is 10,068,347,520 to 1

since a ticket costs a minimum of 2 dollars the break even point when the odds are in your favour is when the pot is at just over $20 billion dollars .... hmmm the pot is never that high....

wrong, the odds are actually 13,983,816 to 1

the numbers do not have to be chosen in any particular order

I agree the numbers don't have to be in any particular order .. thats because the machine puts them in order from lowest on the left side to highest on the right side.. you cannot select a number twice on a single line therefore the equation is:

49*48*47*46*45*44 = the answer I gave .. you are just doing 49 to the power of 6 which is incorrect because as soon as the first number is choosen, a choice of 49, you only have 48 left to choose from.

the math is not hard and I'm pretty sure I'm correct

no, you are not correct

it is simply 49 choose 6

here, i found some websites too:
http://www.joe-ks.com/archives_jan2004/Lotto_Odds.htm
http://lotterybuddy.com/l649odds.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotto_6/49

and it is not 49^6, that ends up being 1.3x10^10, which is billions.. the formula is

n choose p =

n!
-----------
p! (n-p)!

ok the OLGC website seems to support the odds you gave... however I'd like to see actual numbers used in that formula you gave .. just so that I can understand ....

basically on the first number drawn you are choosing 6 out of an available 49
on the second number, you have 5 out of 48, third number drawn is 4 out of 47.. thats the basic idea behind it

However you can't win if you don't play. All it takes is one set of numbers to win.
