motorcycle licence
i'm just curious about this....
if i go write that test for my M1... is that all i need to do to drive a motorcycle?? aside from insurance? or do i need to take a driving school or something else for a bike?? i have my full G but i dont think i'll be driving a car much longer with this car insurance fiasko....
just seeing if this might be an alternative... since tickets on a bike dont count towards a car and vice versa right? anyways i'm sure at least a few people have bikes on here... so fill me in....

an m1 is a valid drivers license so yes you can drive by yourself, but no passengers and no driving after dusk, meening in the summer from 8pm to 8am but read the mannual before you write it or you will fail, motor bike test are totaly differnt than cars, but some of the questions will have to do with the road rules but a good part of them have to do with the bike. here is one of them
motorcycle brake ratio's consist of a ratio from front to back what is it
A. 50% front 50% rear
B. 25% front 75% rear
C. 80% front 20% rear
D. 70% front 30% rear
see a bikes brake system is not like a car you can control the front and rear separtly. and if you look at the roters on any sport bike you will see that the fronts are always bigger. and the answer to the question is D the front to back ratio is 70%-30%
i know this because when i took the test i failed the first one. so take my advice and read the book. if you have any questions and want to ask feel free to call me on my cell. and good luck. but rember when you get a bike keep the ruber side down and always wave at other riders but there is a specific way to it, just put your hand out to your side and down below your tank. the reason is so you do not confuse other drivers on the road and make them think you are using a hand signal to turn. OH memorise those to they will be on the test

ok good info...
although i was told that if i get 6 tickets on a bike they would not count towards me on a car... i didn't understand it at first but who knows
my next question.... how do i get a higher licence i'm guessing an M2? so i can drive at night and such?? does that work the same as cars? ie. driving test?
and if it is like a g2 where you have to wait a certain time would taking a bike course lessen that time?

An M1 only lasts 90 days, you will need to renew after that. You can take an M2 test at any Ministry location that offers the motorcycle testing. I do however recommend you take a Motorcycle Course, and I know the one at Durham College includes your M2 test (basic test covering: walking your bike, braking, turns). You have to possess an M1 for a minimum of 60 days before you can receive your M2, however you can test before that time.
You are requires to possess your M2 for a minimum of one year before you can do your road test for your M. Your M2 expires after 5 years, so you will need to do the road test prior to the expiration.
Required gear for any motorcycle course:
Helmet
Gloves
Jacket (leather or other motorcycle jacket material)
Jeans
Leather boots that cover the ankle

Yeah definitely look into taking the courses.
Motorcycle insurance isn't cheap either though.
For a sport bike, and under 25, you're looking at at least $2000 if not more.
I've had my full M for over a year now and took the M2 course at Durham college in Oshawa.
Great course. They don't provide bikes for the M2 exit though. You got to have your own or borrow one.

don't let anyone tell you a ticket on a bike doesn't count!!!! take it from a guy that's lost his licence 3 times over the years....always for traffic violations and never for something like impaired - multiple speeding tickets etc....
a motor violation goes against the point system on your licence - the ministry doesn't care if you drive an 18 wheeler, a civic or a scooter - it doesn't matter.
plus you insurance depending on your age and the bike you get will likely be higher than your car insurance........reason being, that if youo have an accident on a bike, there often is either extensive injuries or fatalities.
don't get me wrong, i'm a biker from way back and i've had my M licence for 15 years now, but if you're going to get one check your insurance company with make and cc size of bike first! then register at a local bike course (sheridan has one of the best). riding a bije isn't as easy as just jumping on ang going
i know i broke my back and ruptured my kidney when i was 16 and was a long time recovering

good points ^^
obviously i'm not planning on getting a hayabusa or anything.... just something that isn't stupidly slow... but also i'd asume even a "slow" bike would be faster then my civic...
i have some experiance on dirt bikes though... so its not like i'm just starting fresh... but then again that was a few years back.... but the "controls" would be the same no? the only differnce i think is lots of suspension travel....
macnwigs: when you say sheridan... is that the oakville campus??
and do these courses lower your insurance??

i'm not sure which campus it's on, but i've heard alot of good things.....
just remember you can drown in an inch of water.....just like you can kill yourself on a 175cc bike. Size doesn't matter.
other than that....be safe and enjoy - there's nothing like riding a bike!

i know i've always loved bikes.... though i've never riden a sport bike.... can't imagine it to be all that different just not as soft....
do they make bike tires that are more "water friendly"?? cause when you watch those guys on speedvision going around in the rain they are going like 150 mph in the rain.... the tires they use those are probably not very good in the dry though...
