i am of the opinion that degrees are great but they dont mean you are smart...some of the stupidest people i have met have a degree. degrees dont make one person better than another person. my father started a pretty successfull business and he had a grade 9 education.

i think the future is going to be all about the blue collar. i believe office jobs are going to become less important. i never understood how a person that has skills with his hands is payed less then a desk jockey with a degree. working with your hands will get you further then a degree in the future.

oh boy, the natives....hurting an innocent person for a cause is just wrong so screwing with trains i would say is too far. i do believe that the native have been given the shaft but i also feel that all the benifits of being a native more than makes up for all the past crap. it should be on the native leaders to take some responsability and start changing how the reserves are run and how the young ones are brought up. if they were taught to take advantage of the perks and not the government thing could get better.

***these are my views and i have not intended to confuse or offend anyone, that being said...if i did ofend or confuse you, deal with it cause i am not going to change***

SilverSiG, sorry bud but I disagree. Overfishing happens every day in Newfoundland/Canadian waters. Legally no one is suppose to be fishing in those waters, inside the 200 mile limit. But they do. It's Illegal and the Canadian government does nothing. Maybe your right, the province is so small, who cares? But would that not give more reason for Newfoundland to separate? I mean you’re talking about giving up our fish, our way of life. You might as well tell us to turn over and die.

How would we protect ourselves? First extend the 200 mile limit to include the nose and tail fo the Grand Banks. Nfld has wanted this for years. This would ensure the spawning grounds for the Cod could be untouched by those foreign vessels. Nfld told the government this, they turned a blind eye and look what happened, the fishing went under. Second, you would see a bunch of Newfies with big boats, and shotguns keeping and eye out for foreign vessels. You asked, I'm telling you. Your right the population of Nfld is not that big, but quite a few are ready to go down swinging if it comes to that.

If the best interests of the Country means killing Newfoundland, why would Newfoundland want that Government?

I'm not trying to support the idea of Newfoundland separating from Canada. But you seems a little upset by the thought. Just tryng to clarify why some people were thinking about it.

^^ if it's happening when it's illegal that's different, and I wasn't aware of that thanks for the info, so that I will give you - however that still doesn't change my rebuttle to your afghanistan argument in that we didn't send all of our forces - or the forces that should be in nfld to afghanistan...

is there something that now stops newfies on big boats with shotguns patrolling the waters now? (that's a serious question btw)

another serious question - this overfishing does it just mean that a bunch of other boats are there fishing and getting the fish first before the locals get 'em? i'm not exactly familiar with what that entails because if they can fish there couldn't the newfies fish there too? or do they have better technology or somethin??

fishing is banned.... the cod stocks were overfished and need to be left alone to hopefully reproduce to healthy numbers again. It is illegal to fish, the people in Newfoundland are simply respectful of the laws. Other countries are not, and we are doing nothing about it.

The point I was trying to make is that since the late 80's to now, the waters off Newfoundland have been getting raped by foreign overfishing. The government did nothing, but now we are getting caught up in a War that does not involve Canada. I don't know a whole lot about the war in Afghanistan, but I know that it's not our war. Why would they do nothing about other countries abusing our Canadian waters? Why now they are off fighing a war that's not ours? I just don't understand the logic behind that. As a Canadian I would want them to protect Canada first. I'm not saying they should pull the troops back to Nfld. If anything were to be done, it should have been done long ago. I'm questing how the government picks it's battles? Some battles close to home, seem to go unnoticed.

Well you have got the seal hunters, so as long as you have got your papers in order and it's seal hunting season, it's ok to carry shotguns in your boat. But if your going after foreign vessels, well that's another matter.

The 200 mile limit covers most of the waters of Newfoundland, but there is the tail and nose of the Grand Banks, that is exposed and is open for anyone but Canada to fish. These big foreign boats come in and process cod 24/7, and destroy the bottom with there drag nets, where the cod reproduce. It's a very big factor in destroying the cod alone, this is why there is the debate of nfld wanting Canada to claim all of the grand banks. But they also come past the 200 mile limit and do the same in Canadian waters as well. Since 1992 law was passed and Newfoundland cannot fish in their own waters, as they are trying to boost the cod stocks as they are dangerously low. They are on the brink of being an endangered specious. If a Newfie is caught fishing in Canadian waters, they will be charged. But we wait for the cod to come back, while other countries overfish our waters and the grand banks. It's been 15 years and no Cod. I wonder why?

I disagree with that. Although blue collar jobs can be harder on the body, that is not a basis for assigning them more pay. The explanation is like the diamonds vs. water question (why do diamonds cost more than water when we need water to live?). It is a matter of scarcity.

Many office jobs require a certain level of intelligence and experience which is reflected by a degree and/or designation of some sort. That is more scarce than finding someone who can just work with their hands, and so because of the scarcity, the pay is higher for an office job (supply and demand). Of course there are exceptions, but on average, the more education the higher the pay. I know not for Bill Gates, Sidney Crosby, etc. etc. But generally.

Think of it this way: If working with your hands paid higher than jobs requiring degrees, then people in those "degree-jobs" would leave and apply for "hand-jobs" . So who do you think would get the high paying "hand job"? I would put my money on the person with the degree rather than the person without one. Even if the "hand job" required an apprenticeship/certification who is more likely to get accepted to the training program, the degree person or the non-degree person? Once the degree person leaves office jobs for hands jobs, there is one less degree person for office jobs and the pay there starts inching back up.

So to end this unnecessarily long rant- I disagree that working with your hands will get you further (on average). And even if working with your hands did get you further (on average) I would bet that degree-people would take those hand jobs before non-degree people. So sucess should be easier with a degree regardless of whether the economy is service-based or labour-based.

i dunno...i will take experience over paper any day...everyone wants to be a desk jockey, when the desk jockey pool is saturated and there are no people going for the trades which will happen because the youth of today are quite useless with their hands (not all)...the trades will get the money because of need...not saying degrees are no good but its just how i perceive it going in the future. but i also come from a "hand job" background. but again its the way i see things, i dont ask you to see it the same way.

i dunno about you, but i think i'd rather that my GP, dentist, optometrist, and pharmacist all have degrees and not just "hands on experience". degrees are extremely important for certain fields and if you want to climb vertically. they dont just give prominent positions to just anyone these days. having a specialized degree means you've been trained in that specific field...degrees arent just about reading books...they are also hands on...most of my degree training is hands on and problem based learning...it's very specialized training both hands on and intellectually.

granted i think that pretty much most of the undergrad degrees are useless...it can help a little, but if you dont plan on pursuing higher levels of education in that field, it's a big fat waste of money...you're better off spending your money learning a trade and doing something you enjoy instead of wasting your time in universtiy studying stuff you'll never use.

but for ppl who have "office jobs"...they can always upgrade...get specified certifications...get their mba...and move vertically within that field. there will always be room...ppl retire and the cycle continues...and companies grow...the industries grow...technology grows...look at the pharmaceutical industry.

Funny thing. My old roommate was native. She got a lot of stuff for free from the government. Grants, computer stuff etc. You know what she did? She moved out of Brantford, went to school in Kitchener, got her degree in crimial justice and is making something of herself. She even said that there is a problem going on and its insane.
